Pirates Drop Heartbreaker at Norfolk State

NORFOLK, Va. (Sept. 2, 2026) … Hampton dropped a close-knit, five-set match Wednesday night at Norfolk State 22-25, 25-17, 19-25, 28-26, 8-15. Ana Luiza Caminha Matos set a career-high in assists with 41 on the night.
The first set saw the Spartans jump out of the gate to an early 5-0 lead before the Pirates settled in when Nikola Jaroszewicz buried home a kill which started an 8-3 run to even the score at 8-8. After back-to-back service aces from Caminha Matos, Hampton had its first lead of the set at 13-11. The Spartans then quickly stormed back, as they held a late 20-17 lead. Norfolk State scored three of the final four points in the set to take an early 1-0 lead.
Hampton would respond in the second set. A Jaroszewicz kill gave the Pirates a 9-8 lead early, followed by back-to-back kills from Racquel Frazier and Lillian Campbell a few points later to push the margin to 16-12. After a late Spartan flurry, the Pirates rallied off five straight points, and nine of the final 10 points courtesy of numerous Spartan errors to knot the score at one, taking set two 25-17.
Norfolk State jumped out to an early 13-4 lead to start set three, capitalizing on multiple Pirates errors early. Hampton fought back late, rattling off four straight points when Janiah Robinson and Frazier each recorded a kill. The Pirates continued that momentum scoring five of the final six points, but ultimately the early lead proved to be the difference as Hampton fell 25-19 in the third set.
The two sides traded points in the fourth set, as the two were knotted at 13 midway through. Norfolk State took a slight lead late, holding a 19-15 lead with just six points to go. Hampton stormed back to end the set, as Frazier and Lillian Campbell helped the Pirates bring the score within one at 22-21. After a Norfolk State point, the Pirates trailed 25-24, before Pappa and Caminha Matos buried home back-to-back kills to hold a 26-25 lead. The Spartans responded once more, adding a kill of their own, but the Pirates capitalized on an attack error by Norfolk State, and Pappa recorded the final point with a kill to tie the match at 2-2.
Hampton took an early 5-2 set in the fifth set when Jaya Rimm recorded back-to-back service aces. After Norfolk State quickly raced back, scoring four straight to take a 6-5 lead, Jaroszewicz stopped the run, burying home another kill to even the score at six. The Spartans then rattled off six straight points, and eventually tacked on three more to take down Hampton in the fifth set 15-8 to win the match 3-2.
Pappa led the way for Hampton, recording 17 kills on the night, while Frazier (14) and Jaroszewicz (11) each added 10 or more. Caminha Matos led the way in assists with 41 while also leading the Pirates in digs with 14. Robinson and Campbell each registered two solo blocks on the night, while Campbell added two more block assists.
The Pirates have now played two, five-set matches in 2026 through four games after playing just one a season ago.
Hampton now heads to George Mason for a pair of matches in the Patriot/Terrapin Challenge this weekend taking on UMES on Saturday at 4 pm and George Mason on Sunday at 1 pm.
