Pirates Drop Match One to Phoenix

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 24, 2026) … The Hampton University women's volleyball team dropped their first home match of the season match against Elon Thursday night 3-0 (25-20, 25-14, 25-11).Â
The Pirates jumped out to an early 6-2 lead in set one courtesy of kills from Nikola Jaroszewicz, Aliyah Millner and Lelia Ricks. They extended that lead to a 11-6 mark when Lillian Campbell recorded a service ace. The Phoenix quickly responded with a 4-1 run to bring the game within two at 12-10. After Hampton scratched the next two, Elon quickly tied the set at 14 after a 4-0 spurt. The two sides traded the next four points, before the Phoenix rattled off five of the next six points to take a commanding 21-17 lead late. They used that momentum and eventually took set one 25-20.Â
In set two, the Pirates jumped out to another lead early, taking a 4-2 lead on a few Elon errors. The two sides then traded points, as they were knotted at 11-11 midway through the set. Elon took a 15-11 lead into the media timeout, and eventually extended that lead to 20-13 with a 5-0 spurt. They closed the set out scoring the final five points, to take set two 25-14.Â
Elon used the momentum from the second set, jumping out to a commanding 13-5 lead in the third set. After a Racquel Frazier kill, the Phoenix scored the sets next five points, leading 18-6 late. They closed the set out, taking down Hampton in the third set 25-11 to win the match 3-0.Â
The Pirates were led by Katerina Pappa's eight kills on the night while Frazier added seven of her own. Ana Luiza Caminha Matos led Hampton with 15 assists, while Campbell recording four blocks on defense.Â

The two sides will face-off again tomorrow at 2:00 p.m. inside of the Convocation Center to conclude the two match series.Â
