Pirates Resume Conference Play Against North Carolina A&T

HAMPTON, Va. (April 22, 2025) … Coach Cat Tarvin's side returns home to the Pirates Softball Stadium hosting the North Carolina A&T Aggies. This weekend marks the Pirates' final home Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) series of the 2025 season. Sunday will be Senior Day, and the program will be honoring senior Jada Evans. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

While the Pirates have the advantage in the series, North Carolina A&T has won five of the last six meetings. In the previous season's three-game affair, all games were decided by two runs. Hampton went 1-2 against the Aggies, taking game two 2-0. The series' first meeting took place during the 1998 campaign when both sides were in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

In its last time out, Hampton split its doubleheader against Maryland Eastern Shore. The Pirates took game one by a score of 8-4. HU recorded 18 hits which is the second most in a game this season. Carmynn Bonner had a superb game, going 3-for-5 from the plate. Bonner finished the contest with a home run and three RBIs. The Dayton, Ohio product is the second Pirates this season to record a home run in back-to-back contests. Hampton fell to the Hawks 3-1 in game two of the doubleheader. The Pirates' bats were held quiet to only four hits. 

Bonner has been one of the conference's top offensive players this season. With 13 doubles, Bonner sits second in the CAA, along with ranking second for triples (7). Aitirhna Aiken has one of the better on-base percentages (.350) on the team this season. What has helped her percentage is drawing the most walks in the conference (20). Angelina Branch has been Hampton's go-to arm making a team-high 22 appearances on the mound. The sophomore's 77 strikeouts are the seventh most in the league. Branch has surpassed her 2024 strikeout total by 21. 

ABOUT NORTH CAROLINA A&T

In its last time out, North Carolina A&T fell in all three games to the Elon Phoenix. Entering the weekend, the Aggies sit 12th in the conference standings. In the last weekend of March, North Carolina A&T took its first conference series of the 2025 campaign, taking two contests from Towson. The Aggies and the Pirates have faced a similar non-conference opponent in Maryland Eastern Shore. North Carolina A&T took both games from the Hawks. The Aggies are coached by Jose Gonzalez Jr., who is in his third season with the program. 

Coach Gonzalez Jr.'s side sits 15th in the country for triples producing 16 so far this season. The Aggies are averaging 0.36 triples per game, which is 17th in the nation. Both Katriel Williams and Destiny Sims have recorded a team-high six triples. Joey Barkhimer is North Carolina A&T's go-to arm this season. Barkhimer has made 28 appearances while recording 75 strikeouts.
