HAMPTON, Va. (March 6, 2025) … Hampton University men's basketball team begins its postseason run at the Jersey Mike's 2025 Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) Men's Basketball Championship. The Pirates enter the tournament as the 10-seed and will face the seventh-seeded Northeastern Huskies. Coach Ivan Thomas's side split the regular season matchup against the Huskies. This year's tournament marks the Pirate's first time not having to play on the first day of the event.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Prior to the 2024-25 campaign, Hampton had never defeated the Huskies. Hampton won the most recent matchup inside the historic Mathews Arena 84-75. Noah Farrakhan led the Pirates with a season-high 28 points. The Newark, N.J. product shot an efficient 8-for-12 from the field. Kyrese Mullen, Daniel Johnson, and George Beale Jr. also finished the contest in double figures for Hampton.

ABOUT HAMPTON

The Pirates fell to CAA the regular-season champion Towson Tigers 75-72 in their last outing on March 1. Hampton entered the half only down by three points. While Coach Thomas's squad struggled from the charity stripe, the Pirates shot the ball well from the field. Hampton shot 50 percent from the field in both halves. With HU's strong start to the final 20 minutes, the Pirates had the lead heading into the under-12 media timeout. Towson methodically shrunk Hampton's lead with less than five minutes remaining. Both sides continued to trade blows, but the Tigers were able to pull out the victory.

Throughout the regular season, Hampton has been one of the best offensive-rebounding teams in the conference. On average, the Pirates are grabbing 13.1 offensive rebounds, the 30th most in the nation. Another consistent point for HU this season has been bench-scoring. The Pirates rank fourth in the country for bench points per contest. In 26 of the 36 games played this season (83 percent), Hampton's bench has outscored the opponent.

ABOUT NORTHEASTERN

Northeastern enters the CAA tournament as the seventh seed. The Huskies won their last game of the regular season against William & Mary 70-68. Rashad King made the game-winning jumper with four seconds remaining on the clock. Earlier this week King was announced to the All-CAA First Team. The Junior guard averaged 18.4 points per game, the third most in the conference. King this season has also been an elite free throw shooter making 129 free throws the 71st most in the nation.

Throughout the regular season, the Huskies have been one of the best shot-blocking teams in the country. Northeastern is producing a conference-high 4.8 blocks per game. Center Collin Metcalf has helped the Huskies' efforts with the sixth most blocks in the nation (77). Metcalf is also ninth in the country for blocks per game tallying 2.48 per contest. Coach Bill Coen's side has also led the conference in steals per game. The Huskies are producing 7.6 steals per contest which is the 91st most in the nation.
