HAMPTON, Va. (March 20, 2024) … The Hampton University softball team resumes Coastal Athletic Association (CAA) play against the Drexel Dragons. This weekend's slate of games will be streamed on FloCollege. Coach Cat Tarvin's side will be making its second conference road trip.

ABOUT THE SERIES

Since becoming a member of the conference the Pirates have had success against the Dragons. Hampton took the three-game series last year winning games two and three 7-6. The Pirates are 3-3 against Drexel since both teams have joined the CAA. The first meeting between the two sides happened during the 2014 campaign. The Pirates defeated the Dragons 3-2 at the Pirates Softball Stadium.

ABOUT HAMPTON

Earlier this week Hampton had a pause in conference action facing Norfolk State in the Battle of the Bay. The Spartans scored four runs in the top of the first while only recording one hit. While Norfolk State jumped out to a 5-0 lead, HU scored three runs in the bottom of the second frame. Freshman Miyah Sutton began the stanza with a single down the left field line. The Spartans scored at least one run in the final three innings. Hampton fell to Norfolk State 13-4. Kylee Quin had a solid day for the Pirates with a 1.000 on-base percentage. The sophomore recorded her first triple of the 2025 season.

Bonner has been the Pirate's top offensive player this season. The Dayton, Ohio native, leads the Coastal Athletic Association in batting average with a .474. She is also second in the conference for on-base percentage (.523). Sophomore Kylie Hill is the only other HU student-athlete to have a batting average over .300. Hill is currently on a six-game hitting streak. The Chesapeake, Va. product ranks 11th in the CAA for doubles (5).

ABOUT DREXEL

In its last time out, Drexel defeated Monmouth 11-9. The Dragons win was their first conference win of the 2025 campaign. Drexel had five student-athletes record multiple hits. Catcher Kelsie Peteres went a perfect 2-for-2 from the plate and recorded an RBI. While Devyn Demchak only had one hit, she produced a three-run home run. Demchak is one of four Dragons this season to produce a home run.

Drexel's bullpen this season has limited the amount hit batters. The Dragons pitching staff has only tallied nine hit by pitches which is the third-fewest in the CAA. Madison Taylor and Violet Marta are Drexel's go-to arms out of the bullpen. Taylor ranks third in the league for starts (11) while Marta sits 11th (9). The Duo also ranks inside the conference's top ten for complete games.
