HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 22, 2025) … Hampton University softball returns to the Pirates Softball Stadium for the first time this season. The Pirate-Spartan Invite will be the first of two home tournaments for the Lady Pirates. Coach Cat Tarvin's side enters the slate of games with a 4-4 record. 

ABOUT HAMPTON 

The Pirates went 2-1 at the HBCU Collegiate Invitational in Covington, Ga. HU was scheduled to play in five games but the final two were canceled due to the inclement weather. Carmynn Bonner had an incredible tournament recording at least two hits in three games. The junior went 8-for-11 from the plate this past weekend while tallying 4 RBIs. Freshman Miyah Sutton produced the Pirate's first home run of the 2025 campaign against  Grambling State. Sutton went 3-for-4 from the plate against the Tigers and brought in two runs.

So far this season, Bonner and Kylie Hill have been Hampton's top hitters. Bonner is third in the Coastal Athletic Association for batting average with a .520. Hill also ranks inside the top 10 in the conference with a .444. The Chesapeake, Va. native, leads the CAA with 10 RBIs this season. The Pirates have been one of the best offensive teams in the league. On average, Hampton is producing 6.43 runs per game which is second in the CAA and 57th in the country. 

Angelina Branch and Jada Evans have been the go-to arms out of the bullpen for Coach Tarvin's side. The duo has accounted for 85 percent of the 47.2 innings pitched this season. Branch is holding opponents to a .227 batting average. The Chesterfield, Va. native, has recorded 13 strikeouts and only given up two doubles. With a 1.64 ERA, Evans sits fourth in the conference. While she has a record of 1-3, Evans has recorded a shutout. The Pirates bullpen has posted two shutouts this season. 

ABOUT ST. BONAVENTURE

St. Bonaventure begins the 2025 campaign against the Pirates on Sunday. The Bonnies are coached by Mike Treehouse who enters his 28th season at the helm. Coach Treehouse's squad posted a 4-39 record last season. The Bonnies were 3-23 in Atlantic 10 play during the 2024 campaign. St Bonaventure picked up wins against Rhode Island, Fordham, and George Mason. 

The Bonnies return their top hitter from the 2024 season Kymora Wang. As a freshman, Wang produced a .274 batting average and recorded a team-high 32 hits. She also had seven games with two or more hits. However, St. Bonaventure lost Haberl Kennedy who was second on the team with a batting average of .226. Kennedy recorded 21 hits and 11 RBIs a year ago. 

St. Bonaventure lost two of its five pitchers used from the 2024 campaign. Both Kendall Stull and Tori McGraw return for their sophomore season. The duo accounted for 37.8 percent of the innings pitched for the Bonnies last year. Kendall had the best ERA on the team with a 6.35 and pitched one complete game. 

ABOUT MOUNT ST. MARY'S

Mount St. Mary's 2025 campaign begins on Sunday at Norfolk State. The Mountaineers posted a 14-32 record last year and 6-17 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference. Mount St. Mary's is coached by Anna Nagro who is in her 14th season with the program. Coach Nagro's side has produced two .500 seasons. 

The Mountaineers lost their top two hitters from a year ago. Gina Del Giorno returns for her junior campaign. The Thorton, Pa. product produced a .270 batting average and recorded 20 hits. In her sophomore season, Del Giorno made 28 starts while appearing in 39 contests. She also recorded 10 RBIs along with 10 stolen bases. 

While Mount St. Mary's only returns two starters on the mound, Coach Nagro's pitchers accounted for half of the innings pitched. Sophia Schmehl had the best ERA on the team with a 3.73. Schmehl held opponents to a .290 batting average and produced two saves. Olivia Murphy led the Mountaineers in innings pitched 93.2 frames. Murphy posted a 7-7 record while tallying 46 strikeouts.
