Hampton University Men’s Basketball Begins Four-Game Home Stint Against Drexel

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 12, 2025) … The Pirates return home to Convocation Center hosting the Drexel Dragons. Thursday night's contest marks the start of a four-game home stint for Hampton. With less than one month to the Coastal Athletic Association Tournament, HU currently sits one game back from receiving a first-round bye. 

ABOUT THE SERIES

Hampton and Drexel had never faced each other before the Pirates became a member of the conference. HU's win over the Dragons came during the inaugural season. The Pirates won the one-possession game 75-72. The series other two meetings have taken place at Drexel's home arena. The Dragons won the most recent matchup 99-65 during the 2023-24 campaign. 

ABOUT HAMPTON

Coach Ivan Thoams's side earned its second win in the month of February and its fourth CAA victory. Since becoming a member of the conference, the program had not won more than three conference games until this season. In their last time out the Pirates defeated the Northeastern Huskies 84-75. Last Saturday marked HU's first win in the historic Matthews Arena. Noah Farrakhan led the Pirates on the offensive end with a season-high 28 points. Farrakhan had an impressive game from beyond the arc going 4-for-6 from beyond the arc. Xzaiver Long helped the offensive flow with a career-high six assists. Long also chipped in with five rebounds and three steals.  

Hampton continues to receive production off the bench at a high clip. The Pirate's 38.6 bench points per game is the second most in the nation. In 21 of 25 games played (84 percent) this season, Hampton's bench has outscored the opponent's bench. George Beale Jr. has been one of Hampton's top offensive threats averaging 13.1 points per game. Beale Jr.'s 123 made field goals is the 12th most in the league. 

ABOUT DREXEL

Drexel currently sits eighth in the conference standings with six CAA contests remaining. While the Dragons are 4-6 in their last 10 games, Drexel has battled some of the top teams in the league. The Dragons lost to conference front-runners Towson only by one point 55-54 and second place UNCW by two 81-79. Drexel is coached by Zach Spiker who is in his ninth season with the program. Under Spiker, the Dragons have produced four consecutive winning campaigns.

Throughout the 2024-25 season, Drexel has been one of the better shooting teams in the conference. On average, Coach Spiker's squad is shooting 41 percent from the field which is the third-best in the CAA. The Dragons have also been effective at limiting the opponents' chances at the charity stripe. Drexel's 15.3 fouls committed per game is the 53rd fewest in the country.
