Box Score ATLANTA, Ga. (Dec. 19, 2025) … Jaylke Gaines-Wyatt poured in 22 points for the Pirates, as Hampton fell to Grambling St. 81-72 Friday evening.
Daniel Johnson got the scoring started for the Pirates Friday afternoon draining the first five points for Hampton, but it was Grambling racing out to a 12-8 lead through the first four minutes. The Tigers extended that run into the next media timeout holding a 20-14 lead.
Grambling St. continued to hold their lead throughout the next eight minutes, holding onto a 35 to 29 lead at the under four media timeout. Out of the timeout, Gaines-Wyatt made two free throws to cut the Tigers lead to four with a minute and 40 seconds remaining in the half.
At the break, Grambling St. held a 38-33 lead. The Pirates were led by Gaines-Wyatt's 12 first half points, while Johnson added seven of his own. Hampton shot 44.9 percent from behind the arc in the first frame with Gaines-Wyatt making two. Grambling St. forced the Pirates into six first half turnovers, leading to 12 Tiger points.
Josh Ogundele got the scoring started in the second half when he canned a pair of free throws. Grambling St. quickly responded, outscoring Hampton by three through the first media timeout to hold a 48-39 lead.
The Pirates wouldn't go away quietly, cutting the lead to five at 53-48 with 12 minutes remaining when
Christian Watson made back-to-back layups.
The Tigers then ripped off an 8-0 run to extend its lead once more to double digits with eight minutes remaining. Hampton continued to battle the remainder of the evening, but ultimately fell 81-72 in game two of the Chris Paul HBCU Classic.
Hampton will return to action after the holidays when they begin conference play at home on Dec. 29 against Stony Brook. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m. Inside the Convocation Center.
