GREENSBORO, N.C. (Jan. 31, 2025) … Homestanding North Carolina A&T used a 22-8 third quarter burst to gain breathing room and defeat the Hampton Pirates 74-51 in Coastal Athletic Association women's basketball action on Friday night in front of a sold out crowd of over 4,800 at the Corbett Sports Center.
In a first quarter that saw neither team take more than a two-point lead over the first five minutes, Hampton answered an opening layup from Paris Locke with a three-ball from
Aisha Dabo for a 3-2 lead.
Chaniya Clark's putback stuck the Aggies up 4-3, but
Jasha Clinton responded with a triple a 3-2 lead early on an
Aisha Dabo triple and push it to 6-4 off a
Jasha Clinton triple with 8:20 remaining.
Clinton hit a free throw and then another triple as Hampton held a 10-9 lead with 5:36 on the clock. Hampton trimmed the deficit to 16-14 on a
Le'Asia Foreman jumper with 90 seconds left but trailed 19-14 at the end of one after a Maleia Bracone layup.
In the second, the Aggies pushed the lead to 24-15 on a Locke layup with 7:40 on the clock. The advantage eventually grew to 29-19 after a Bracone three-pointer at the 4:06 mark. She and
Tiani Abrams traded three-pointers over the next two possessions as Hampton trailed 32-25 following Abrams' second triple with 2:30 left on the clock.
CeCe Thomas brought the Pirates to 32-27 on a jumper with 90 seconds on the clock, but a Locke pullup with 31 seconds remaining gave the hosts a 34-27 lead.
Tyra Kennedy scored the first two buckets for Hampton on a driving layup and a stepback jumper to help Hampton get to 36-31 with 8:37 on the clock. The Aggies closed the third quarter on a 22-4 run as Ajia James hit a three-pointer to start and Elliott Jessup ended the run on a triple with 32 seconds remaining for a 56-35 lead at the end of three quarters.
Clinton paced Hampton with 23 points, her fifth game of over 20 points this season. Abrams added a season-high of six points on her two three-pointers in the opening half and was joined by Dabo with six points.
Le'Asia Foreman had a team-high nine rebounds and Thomas had four assists to lead Hampton.
Bracone paced three in double figures for N.C. A&T (12-8, 8-1) with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Jordyn Dorsey added 11 points and seven boards and Elliott Jessup also had 11 points.
Hampton is back on the road next Friday, February 7 as they visit Towson and then will host William & Mary on Sunday, February 9.
