TOWSON, Md. (Feb. 7, 2025) … Anasia Staton paced three in double figures for homestanding Towson with 18 points as the Tigers defeated Hampton 70-54 in Coastal Athletic Association women's basketball on Friday night at TU Arena.
The contest opened similar to the game two weeks ago in Hampton as the Tigers had a rash of turnovers as Hampton forced seven in the first quarter.
Jasha Clinton hit the only 3-pointer of the first quarter to give Hampton its largest lead at 11-8.
Towson closed the first quarter hitting 6-of-8 from the floor, while Hampton missed its last four shots. Staton hit a turnaround jumper in the lane just before the first period buzzer as the Tigers held a 13-11 lead.
Staton carried that momentum into the second period where she scored the first five points putting the Tigers up 18-11 on a three-point play with 8:43 left.
Jenae Dublin broke the 9-0 Towson run with a pair of free throws at 8:29 to trail 18-13. Diakite hit a pair of free throws then Hampton went on a 7-0 run to trim the deficit to 21-20 after a steal by
Malaka Cobb who found
Amyah Reaves and she connected with
Diamond Wiggins for a layup to trail 21-20.
Staton hit a three-pointer and Deja Bristol put back a Shariah Baynes jumper to put the hosts up 26-20 with 4:23 left. That lead grew to 29-22 after a Jordan Wakefield with 3:11 remaining.
Hampton closed the half with a
Tiani Abrams 3-ball and a layup by
CeCe Thomas as the Pirates trailed 31-27 at intermission. The Pirates forced 15 turnovers which resulted in 17 points in the first 20 minutes.
In the third quarter, Towson scored nine of the first 10 points to take a 40-28 lead on a Baynes 3-ball with 6:28 left. That advantage grew to 44-30 on a Kayla Morris putback at the 4:09 mark. The fourth saw Hampton pull to 60-48 following a three-pointer by
Tiani Abrams with 3:53 showing on the clock.
Clinton was the leading scorer for Hampton in the game with 13 points. Dublin added nine points and seven rebounds, while Abrams,
Aisha Dabo and
Arlisha Boston added six points apiece.
Malaka Cobb dished out a season-high matching three assists to lead the Pirates.
Joining Staton in double figures were Khady Leye with a near double-double of 11 points and nine rebounds, while Semaya Turner had 11 points and five boards. Towson held a 48-28 advantage on the boards, including a 20-10 on the offensive glass.
After the first meeting when Hampton forced 30 Towson turnovers, the Pirates were able to turn the Tigers over 24 times with Reaves recording a season high four steals.
Hampton returns to action on Sunday afternoon hosting William & Mary at 2 p.m. for the Play For Kay game for breast cancer awareness.
