Hampton Women’s Soccer Returns to Action After Week Hiatus

HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 30, 2024) … Coach Scot Vorwold's Lady Pirates return to action after a week hiatus facing Mississippi Valley State. Tuesday's match will be the first time in program history that Hampton has faced the Devilettes. In HU's nine years as a program, it has never faced an opponent from the Southwestern Athletic Conference. For MVSU it will be its first contest against Division I opponent since Aug. 15.
A Look at the Lady Pirates
Hampton is coming off a 4-3 loss to the Saint Peter's Peacocks. After the 35th minute, the Lady Pirates were trailing by two until a late goal from Sanaa Perry. Perry led HU in scoring during the non-conference portion of the season last year with two goals. With the momentum gained from the late strike, Hampton was able to score the equalizer early in the second half. Junior Makayla Wade found the back of the net with a strike outside of the penalty area. With less than seven minutes to go in the match newcomer Sofia Jimenez put the Lady Pirates in the lead 3-2. The Peacocks offense caught first in the final four minutes producing two goals to escape with the victory.
This season both of Hampton's freshman goalkeepers Avery John and Kaitlyn Howell have seen action. Howell has produced 12 saves this season in the two appearances she has made. John has got the start in two matches while making nine saves facing 26 shots. The Lady Pirates on average are tallying 7.6 saves per match leading the Coastal Athletic Association. With three goals scored during the Siant Peter's match, it was the first time since the 2021 season that Hampton scored three goals against a Division I opponent.

Mississippi Valley State enters the match with a 0-1 record falling to Southern Miss 5-0. MVSU was outshot 44-21 and recorded three shots on goal. The Devilettes have faced another opponent Mississippi College but it was an exhibition not affecting their record. MVSU enters the season with first-year head coach Alex Roberts. Roberts graduated from Louisiana in 2011.
The Devilettes return Olujede Bridgewater for her junior season. In 2023 she was called up to join the St. Kitts-Nevis Senior Women's Football team for the CONCACAF Women's Gold Cup qualifiers. MVSU also returns its top goal scorer from the 2023 campaign Genesis Hernandez. Hernandez found the back of the net four times. The Spring, Texas native, started 10 matches and played in 12 tallying 931 minutes.
