Hampton Women’s Soccer Begins Coastal Athletic Association Play Against William & Mary

HAMPTON, Va. (Sept. 17, 2024) … Coach Scot Vorwold's Lady Pirates are set to begin Coastal Athletic Association play this Thursday afternoon at Powhatan Field. Hampton begins conference play against the Tribe of William & Mary. The match is set to begin at noon and will be streamed on FloSports while the live stats for the game are also available at hamptonpirates.com

Entering its third season in the CAA, the Lady Pirates have tied the program record for wins in a season with a 3-4-1 overall record. Historically, Hampton is 0-2-3 in conference openers. Thursday's match against William & Mary marks the third meeting all-time between the two programs. Hampton has never faced the Tribe at Powhatan Field.

Last time out, the Lady Pirates capped nonconference play against Virginia State on Sept. 16, winning the match 7-1 over the Trojans. For the fourth time during the 2024 campaign, Hampton outshot an opponent (22-3). The offense was explosive out of the gate scoring four times in the first half. Sophomore forward Sanaa Perry had an impressive match producing two goals. Freshman Ellen Van Caenegem continued her impressive stretch of matches by tallying a goal and an assist.

So far this season the Lady Pirates have scored the second most goals (17) in the CAA. For the first time in program history, Hampton has had 11 different student-athletes find the back of the net. Over 45 percent of HU's goals contributions have come from the 2024 signing class. Perry leads the Lady Pirates in scoring finding the back of the net four times. The Bowie, Md. native, sits third in the conference for goals. She also doubled her total from her freshman season.

Julie Shackford is in her seventh season at the helm in Williamsburg, leading the Tribe to a 5-3 record. While Coach Shackford has faced Hampton twice in her career, she has not lost to the Lady Pirates. In 2023, she led the program to a 6-3-3 record in the CAA and made the conference tournament. The Tribe is coming off a 1-0 victory over Atlantic Coast Conference foe N.C. State on Sept. 12.

Senior forward Leah Iglesias has been one of the conference's best-attacking players. The Clare Place, N.Y. native leads William & Mary with three goals and three assists. Iglesias is currently tied for sixth in the CAA for points amassing nine through the first eight games. Sophomore Jazzy Lorenz has been the Tribe's go-to goalkeeper starting in seven contests. Lorenz has produced three shutouts while only allowing five goals.
