Lady Pirates Begin 2024 Campaign on the Road Against NEC Foe Mount St. Mary’s

HAMPTON, Va. (Aug. 13, 2024) … Hampton University women's soccer begins the 2024 season this Thursday marking the dawn of the Scot Vorwold era for the program. The Lady Pirates have faced Mount St. Mary's four times prior to this week's match. Hampton's season opener is set to start at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed on ESPN+.

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Historically, the matchup has favored Mount St. Mary's with the Mountaineers leading the series 4-0. Last season's contest proved to be the closest in the series with the Mount prevailing late 2-1. Hampton's Sanaa Perry found the back of the net in the 36th minute giving the Lady Pirates an early lead. Before heading into the half, the Mountaineers scored the equalizer on a penalty kick. Mount St. Mary's Luisangley Navas produced the game-winning goal in the final 45 minutes.

Hampton enters the season with a young roster. Over 30 percent of the 2024 roster consists of freshmen. In Coach Vorwold's first recruiting class includes 13 student-athletes from all ranks of the sport. The Lady Pirates were able to recruit Virginia Beach, Va. standout Aniyah Fraser Adams. While attending Frank W. Cox High, she was a second-team All-State selection and made the All-Region first team. The program has seen an influx of international players with seven on the roster. Prior to the 2024 season, there had only been four international student-athletes since the program's existence.

While the Lady Pirates brought in new talent, 16 players return from the 2023 roster. Hampton's top goal scorers Sanaa Perry and Patricia Wharton return. Perry and Wharton found the back of the net twice a year ago. Perry, a native of Bowie, Md., was the one Lady Pirate to score in consecutive matches (Saint Peter's, Mount St. Mary's) during the 2023 campaign. Both of Wharton's goals came during conference play.
