HAMPTON, Va. (March 7, 2024) … Stony Brook (24-3, 15-2) proved why it's the top team in the CAA as the Seawolves posted a 71-35 victory over Hampton (3-24, 3-14). The Seawolves overcame a slow start, leading just 14-10 after the first quarter, to win for the 10
th time in their last 11 games.
Camryn Hill tallied 19 of Hampton's 35 points despite missing nearly 10 minutes after suffering an ankle injury in the third quarter. Hill scored her 800
th career point in the game.
Stony Brook had four players score in double figures including Sherese Pittman (15), Khari Clark (13), Gigi Gonzalez (13), and Victoria Keenan (11). Stony Brook dominated the boards, outrebounding Hampton, 71-35, including 20 offensive rebounds.
Hampton's swarming defense forced 12 Stony Brook turnovers in the game's first two periods and limited the Seawolves to 36 percent shooting. But the Lady Pirates shot 24 percent from the field and missed all six three-point attempts. For the game, Hampton was 0-11 from three-point range.
Stony Brook held a precarious 14-10 lead after the first quarter without scoring a two-point basket. The Seawolves canned four three-pointers and a pair of free throws. Keenan led the way with three treys for nine points.
Hill scored Hampton first seven points of the second quarter as Hampton closed to 18-17 with 8:02 left before halftime. But a 14-2 run over the next 4:14 by the Seawolves upped the lead to 32-19 while Hampton made just one of nine shots.
The third quarter belonged to the Seawolves. Stony Brook scored the first 12 points of the quarter and outscored the Lady Pirates, 18-4, Hampton's fewest points in a quarter this season. The Seawolves grabbed 16 rebounds including eight on the offensive boards, to pull away, 54-25, after Hill left the game.
It was Senior Night and Hampton's three seniors were honored in pregame ceremonies. Hill,
Cheyenne Talbot and
Heaven Accimeus were feted with family and friends on hand.
Hill leads the Lady Pirates in virtually every offensive category this season while Talbot is Hampton's second-leading scorer and top rebounder. Accimeus missed the season with a broken foot but remained an active part of the team.
Hampton concludes the regular season on Saturday, March 9 at 4:00 p.m. when the Lady Pirates host Campbell at the Hampton Convocation Center.
