HAMPTON, VA. (March 9, 2024) … Despite 19-point, 10-rebound performance by senior Cheyenne Talbot, Hampton (3-25, 3-15) fell to Campbel (16-13, 9-9), 70-61, in the final game of the regular season for both teams. Hampton was without the services of leading scorer Camryn Hill, who suffered an ankle injury in the March 7 game Stony Brook.
Both teams got off to slow starts with Campbell scoring the game's first five points. Talbot hit a pair of free throws and then a basket to close to 5-4 midway through the first quarter. A 7-0 run by the Camels saw the lead grow to 12-4 before Hampton stopped the rally with a three-pointer by Aisha Dabo. Campbell scored half of its points (eight) in the paint in the initial quarter and outrebounded the Lady Pirates, 17-4.
Campbell scored the first five points of the second quarter to go ahead 21-11. Talbot hit a jumper to break the streak with 8:27 left before halftime. Christabel Ezumah had a double-double by halftime with 12 points and 16 rebounds (outrebounding the entire Hampton team). Both teams lost sight of the basket as Campbell converted just two of its final 12 shots in the second quarter and Hampton made just 1-of-9 from the field.
In the first half, Campbell shot 33 percent from the field and Hampton hit 24 percent. The Camels dominated the boards, outrebounding the Lady Pirates 18-8 in the quarter and 35-12 in the first half. Talbot tallied seven points with six of Hampton's 12 rebounds. Amyah Reaves had six points.
Both team's offense got untracked in the third quarter. The Camels dominated inside play scoring seven of their third quarter baskets inside the paint. Hampton's Casey Miller had nine points in the quarter with Reaves (6) and Talbot (4) keeping the game close. Hampton shot 50 percent from the field in the quarter but Campbell's inside dominance gave the Camels a 58-41 advantage.
Hampton rallied in the fourth quarter, outscoring Campbell, 20-12. The Lady Pirates closed to within nine but could get no closer the rest of the way.
The game marked the final home contest for seniors Camryn Hill, Heaven Accimeus and Talbot. Hampton dressed eight players for the game. Seven players on the sidelines for the end-of-season game.
