Lady Pirates Continue Conference Play against Monmouth

HAMPTON, Va. (March 14, 2024) … Hampton University's softball team resumes Coastal Athletic Association play against the Hawks of Monmouth. Both sides have already started conference play. Monmouth went 1-1 in its opening series against Drexel winning 2-0 and falling in the second contest 7-6. This weekend's three-game series is set to begin Friday at 11:00 a.m.

A Look at the Lady Pirates

Hampton in its last time out, split a doubleheader with Quinnipiac at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium. HU's bats were on fire producing a team-high 14 hits against the Bobcats in game one. Sophomore Carmynn Bonner recorded three hits. The Dayton, Ohio native, started out the bottom of the first with a triple. Taylor Ivey would also go 3-4 from the plate and finished with an RBI. Freshman Taryn Bennett picked up her third win of the 2024 campaign. While the Lady Pirates had an early advantage in the second half of the doubleheader, Quinnipiac was able to score late defeating HU in extra innings. 

So far this season Ivey has been the Lady Pirates' best hitter. The Bowie, Md. native, had a six-game consecutive hitting streak. While Janae Lyles had a slow start to the season, she has recorded a hit in nine of the last 10 games. During this stretch, she has a batting average of .384. Against Quinnipiac Lyles went 3-7 from the plate with two doubles and an RBI.

A Look at the Hawks

Monmouth enters this weekend with a 7-16 overall record and is 1-1 in CAA play. The Hawks have had one home game this season against Saint Joe's. MU came out on top winning 3-1 while producing six hits. Monmouth is coached by Shannon Salsburg who enters her ninth season with the program. The Hawks have had five winning seasons under Salsburg.

Monmouth this season has been a solid defensive team this season producing the third most double plays in the CAA (9). While the Hawks have the fifth-highest ERA in the conference, they have posted two shutouts this season. MU's ace out of the bullpen during the 2024 campaign has been Billie Kerwood. Kerwood in her 64.1 innings pitched, has struck out 60 batters. Coach Salsburg's top hitter is sophomore Savannah Simons. The Kapaa, Hawaii native, is the only Hawk with a batting average over .300 (.333).
