Hampton Men’s Basketball Host Hofstra in CAA Clash

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 7, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team returns to the Convocation Center hosting Hofstra. The Pirates is coming off a successful showing at the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic. Thursday night's contest will be the fourth-ever meeting between HU and the Pride. Tip-off is set for 7:00 PM and fans can view the game on Flo Hoops.

A Look at the Pirates

Hampton is coming off a win at the Invesco QQQ Legacy Classic defeating rivals Howard 63-61. Freshman Jerry Deng helped lift the Pirates past the Bison hitting back-to-back threes in the final minute. With a game-high 21 points, Deng was named the game's MVP. The Norcross Ga. native, later in the week was named the Coastal Athletic Association Co-Rookie of the Week. In Hampton's past two games, he averaged 13.5 points and 6.5 rebounds while going 4-7 from beyond the arc.

As the Pirates enter the final month of the regular season, Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad has continued to receive output from their bench. HU is currently averaging 27 points off the bench which is 40th in the nation. In its last time out the Hampton bench produced 80 percent of the Pirate's points (51). Ja'Von Benson has started to climb up the CAA rankings for blocks. With a career-high seven last Saturday, he sits fifth in the conference. 

Hampton By the Numbers
  • 54: Jerry Deng had his first 20-point-plus performance since the game against Mary Baldwin on Dec. 3
  • 37.04: The Pirates sit fourth in the CAA for rebounds per game
  • 43: Tedrick Wilcox Jr. ranks 14th in the conference for made three this season
  • 10: The double-double machine Kyrese Mullen leads the CAA in double-doubles 
  • 68: Since returning, Jordan Nesbitt has been one of HU's better distributors and sits 11th in the conference for assists. 

A Look at the Pride

Hofstra this past week picked up two conference wins defeating Stony Brook and Towson. With the Pride's Tyler Thomas averaging 24.5 points last week he was named the CAA's Player of the Week. Along with the conference's award, Thomas received the Oscar Robertson National Player of the Week and then Men's Basketball Writers Association Player of the Week. Since the first meeting between the Pirde and Hampton, Coach Speedy Claxton's squad has gone 4-1. 

Throughout the season the Pride have led the conference in three-point attempts. Out of Hofstra's 659 attempts this season, Thomas has accounted for 35 percent of the team's attempts from beyond the arc. However, the graduate senior leads the country in three-pointers per game (3.7) and total threes with 85. Coach Claxton's guard play has been one of the team's strengths. Along with having one of the country's top scorers, Hofstra's Jaquan Carlos is one of the conference's best distributors with 142 assists.
