Lady Pirates Fall on the Road to Gardner-Webb

Box Score BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. (Feb. 25, 2024) … Hampton University's softball team closed this weekend's slate of games with a loss to Gardner-Webb 8-0. Though three innings the contest would be scoreless. The Runnin' Bulldogs were able to get on the board first. With four runs in the fifth frame, Gardner-Webb built upon its early advantage. While Hampton had chances to score throughout the contest, HU could not capitalize.

Freshman Taryn Bennett got the start for the Lady Pirates. Through four innings, Bennet had only given up two hits. Unfortunately one of the knocks given up was a homerun making it 1-0 in favor of GWU. Hampton would have a solid opportunity to get on the board first in the top of the third. Both Aitirhna Aiken and Emily Keeple recorded a single putting runners on first and second. With a groundout to the infield, the Runnin' Bulldogs held Hampton scoreless.

At the bottom of the fifth Gardner-Webb added to its one-run lead. The Runnin' Bulldogs bats caught fire producing four hits. GWU began the frame with consecutive hits. Before Hampton could record an out Gardner Webb made 3-0. Before the end of the inning, the Runnin' Bulldogs advantage grew to five.

The Lady Pirates in the next frame were able to produce base runners early. Emily Kepple led off the inning with a walk. With Janae Lyles and Meagan Ramos recording hits the basses would be loaded with no outs. However, Hampton could not get on the board with Gardner-Webb securing three quick outs. The Runnin' Bulldogs scored three more runs before the end of the contest.

Hampton University softball returns to action this Friday against FDU. The Lady Pirates matchup with FDU will begin an 11-game home stretch.
