Pirates Travel North to Face Stony Brook in Mid-Week CAA Matchup

HAMPTON, Va. (Feb. 14, 2024) … Hampton University men's basketball team returns to action this Thursday at 6:31 p.m. against Stony Brook. In the history of HU's program, the Pirates have only faced the Seawolves twice. Before falling to Campbell on the road, SBU had won its previous two contests.

A Look at the Pirates

In its last time out, Hampton fell to Coastal Athletic Association frontrunner UNCW 95-65. In Kyrese Mullen's return from injury, he led the contest in points with 23 while grabbing nine rebounds.  Freshman Jerry Deng had another solid outing for the Pirates. The Norcross, Ga. native produced 19 points on 6-12 shooting from the field. While Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad struggled from beyond the arc in the first half, Hampton shot 50 percent from three in the final 20 minutes.

Throughout the season, the Pirates have defended the three well. On average opponents are only shooting 32 percent from beyond the arc, which is the third-best in the CAA. Hampton has also been active on the offensive glass during the 2023-24 campaign. Collecting 11.2 offensive rebounds per contest, HU sits fourth in the conference. With Kyrese Mullen being one of the CAA's top rebounders, the Pirates have been a solid defensive rebounding squad.

A Look at the Seawolves

However, SBU has struggled on the road posting a 4-9 record away from home. SBU is coached by Geno Ford who enters his sixth season with the program.  In Ford's first full season with Stony Brook, the Seawolves had a 20-win season.

Coach Ford's squad is led by graduate senior Tyler Stephenson-Moore. The Jamaica, N.Y. native averages a team-high 14.9 points per game. Stephenson-Moore is a consistent free-throw shooter with the seventh-best free-throw percentage in the league. While the Seawolves are only attempting 17.1 free throws per contest, SBU is committing the second-fewest fouls per game.
