Pirates Begin Two-Game Road Stint Against Hofstra

HAMPTON, Va. (Jan. 17, 2024) … After a three-game home stint inside the Convocation Center, the Pirates are back on the road. Hampton University men's basketball team continues Coastal Athletic Association play on Thursday against Hofstra at 7:00 PM. Before joining the CAA, the Pirates had never faced the Pride. 

A Look at Your Pirates

Hampton is coming off an 81-80 loss to North Carolina A&T. The contest would be tight throughout with a total of 11 lead changes. Jerry Deng, Jordan Nesbitt, Tristan Maxwell, and Joshua Lusane all finished the game in double figures. Deng and Nesbitt were efficient from beyond the arc shooting 50 percent or better from three. 

Through the halfway point of the season, Kyrese Mullen has proven to be one of the best forwards in the conference. The Norfolk, Va. native, leads the CAA in rebounds with 150. Mullen's 9.4 rebounds per contest is also a conference high. The sophomore has seen an increase in his averages across the board. With Mullen taking on a bigger role this season, he is producing a team-high 14.7 points per game.

A Look at the Pride

Hofstra enter Thursday night's contest with an 8-9 overall record and 1-3 in conference play. The Pride started off the season hot winning six of their first eight. Since then, Hofstra has experienced a slump going 2-7 it's last nine contests. The Pride are coached by Speedy Claxton, who enters his third season with the program. In Claxton's first two seasons, his squad produced consecutive 20-win seasons. 

Coach Claxton's team has one of the best scorers in the country Tyler Thomas. The New Haven, Conn. native, leads the conference in points and ranks sixth in the country. With his 387 points this season, Thomas is one of 25 players to average 20 or more points per contest. The Pride is one better three-point shooting teams in the CAA. Hofstra ranks third in the conference for three-point percentage (35.8%) and makes 10.4 per game.
