Hampton Men’s Basketball Hosts the Fighting Squirrels of Mary Baldwin

HAMPTON, Va. (Dec. 10, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball team continue their home stretch against non-conference foe Mary Baldwin. Monday night's matchup will be the first time these two programs have faced each other. Mary Baldwin's program is in its infancy beginning in the 2019-20 season. 

A Look at Your Pirates

Hampton defeated Virginia University of Lynchburg 121-66 in their last time out. From the jump, the Pirates were in control shooting 42 percent from the field in the first half. Coach Edward Joyner Jr.'s squad continued to score in the final 20 minutes. HU improved their shooting in the second half nearly shooting 70 percent from the field. Seven different Pirates would finish the contest in double figures. 

HU's Tristan Maxwell produced a team-high 20 points and had his first triple-double of his career. Maxwell became one of seven players at the Division I level to achieve this feat during the 2023-24 season. Freshman Jerry Deng also had a stellar performance for the Pirates last time out. The Norcross, Ga. native, tallied a career-high 19 points in his first career start. Deng shot 7-9 from the field and grabbed five rebounds.

A Look at the Fighting Squirrels

Mary Baldwin enters the contest with a (3-5) overall record. Hampton will be the Fighting Squirrels' only NCAA Division I opponent this season. MBU is coached by Matt Griggs who was named the program's first head coach. Mary Balwin was a club team for their first two seasons but now they compete in the USA South Conference. Griggs in his three seasons with the program has posted a record of (25-31).

The Fighting Squirrels this season have been led by senior guard Quentin Hart. Through eight games Hart is averaging a team-high 11.3 points per game. So far this season he has accounted for 16% of MBU's total scoring. The Herndon, Va. native, started the season with back-to-back 20-point performances.
