Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pirates End Paradise Jam With a Loss to San Jose State

ST. THOMAS, V.I. (Nov. 20, 2023) … Hampton University men's basketball team fell to San Jose State 71-52. After the first half, the Pirates found themselves leading by four. With the Spartans shooting 55% from the field in the second half, HU's offense could not keep up. The Pirates for the first this season would be perfect from the free throw line going 10-10.

How it Happened

Both sides struggled to score in the opening minutes of the contest. San Jose State got on the board first by getting to the free-throw line. Tedrick Wilcox Jr. got going from beyond the arc hitting an early three. With Joshua Lusane crashing the boards he was able to produce a putback layup before the first media timeout.

The Pirates only trailed three coming out of the first break. However, Hampton's hot shooting from FGCU had cooled off. HU started off the contest 2-10 from the field and 1-5 from beyond the arc. With Hampton struggling to find their rhythm, San Jose State jumped out to a 16-5 lead.

Hampton would be scoreless for four straight minutes, but a hook shot by Ja'Von Benson gave the Pirates a much-needed boost. Benson's jumper at the 12:51 mark sparked a 14-0 run for the Pirates. The Columbia, S.C. native, during this produced six points while shooting an efficient 3-3 from the field.  Heading into the half Hampton had built a four-point lead 33-29.

Coming out of the half, the Spartan's offense which shot 28% from three in the first half came alive in the final 20 minutes. San Jose State started the final half of the game on a 23-9 run. This would give the Spartans their first double-digit lead since the 13:10 mark in the first half.

The Pirates would hold the San Jose State's advantage to 10 for most of the final 10 minutes. With the Spartans scoring 11 of the final 13 points, Hampton would fall 71-52. Joshua Lusane led the HU in scoring with a season-high 17 points. Lusane also had seven rebounds and only missed one shot from the field. Tedrick Wilcox Jr. would be the only other Pirates to have double-digit scoring.
