HAMPTON, Va. (Nov. 27, 2023) … UMBC (4-4) trailed throughout most of the game but fought back for a 80-76 win over Hampton (2-5) before 1,003 fans at the Convocation Center. UMBC made back-to-back three-pointers to tie the game, 38-38, with 14:50 left in the contest. The Retrievers made 10 of 12 free throws in the final 3:20 to pull out the victory.
Dion Brown (17 points), Marcus Banks (14), Marion Short (13), and Bryce Johnson (10) all tallied double-figures to lead the Retrievers. Hampton's
Kyrese Mullen led all scorers with 18, followed by
Tedrick Wilcox Jr. (17),
Tristan Maxwell (13), and
Joshua Lusane (10).
Hampton scored seven of the game's first nine points and led, 32-26, at intermission despite missing its first 10 three-point attempts. The Pirates made 2-of-16 treys for the game. Hampton's
Kyrese Mullen had eight points with seven rebounds in the first 20 minutes to lead the way.
After UMBC tied the score, 38-38, the two teams battled back-and-forth. UMBC took its first lead in the game, 55-54, with 7:39 to go when Brown made a basket and was fouled. His free throw put the Retrievers ahead. The Pirates battled Back to take the lead but UMBC reeled off seven straight points to take a 59-54 lead with 6:34 left.
With Hampton battling back, Wilcox scored and was fouled but was assessed a technical foul. UMBC converted both free throws stunting Hampton's comeback attempt.
The Pirates return to action on Dec. 1 when Hampton travels to Princess Anne, Md. To take on Maryland-Eastern Shore.
