Lady Pirates Closeout 2023 Season Against Drexel

HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University women's soccer team closes out the 2023 campaign this Sunday against Drexel. Sunday's match will mark the first-ever meeting between the two programs.

A Look at you Lady Pirates

The Lady Pirates in their last time out suffered a 9-1 loss to the Blue Hens of Delaware. However, for the first time since the match against Elon, HU would have five or more shots. Hampton also had three shots on goal which were the most in a contest since September 10th. Junior Zaria Ascue was able to produce the first assist of her collegiate career.

Towards the end of the 2023 season, Patricia Wharton has been on fire. The Smyrna Ga. native in her last three appearances has scored two goals. She's achieved this feat with less than 90 minutes of action. Senior Olexia Mitchell has been the Lady Pirates' go-to goalkeeper since the contest against Campbell. In her two starts, Mitchell made 17 saves. The senior in the match against Campbell came close to tying a career-high ten saves.

Scouting the Dragons of Drexel

Drexel enters the final match of the season with a (6-8-3) overall record and is (2-6-3) in the Coastal Athletic Association. In their last time out, DU defeated UNCW 2-0 picking up their second conference win. The Dragons are coached by Ray Goon who enters his 27th season with the program. During his almost 30 years of coaching, Goon has amassed 195 wins.

The Dragons have been one of the better offensive teams in the conference scoring 27 goals this season. Both Casey Touey and Annalena O'Reilly led DU in goals with five this season and sit tied for eighth in the conference. Along with being a scorer Touey has produced 2 assists this season. Delaney Lappin and Meg Tate are offensive weapons for the Dragons with their five assists. In the previous match against the UNCW Molly Piso got the start in goal for Drexel. Piso has made 15 appearances and has started five matches this season.
