Women’s Soccer Hosts Campbell in Final Home Match of the 2023 Season

HAMPTON, Va. - Hampton University women's soccer team hosts Campbell University for their final home match of the 2023 season. For the Lady Pirates, it will be Senior Day as they will honor eight seniors. Sunday's match will mark the fourth time that HU has faced Campbell.

Scouting Your Lady Pirates

Hampton in their last time out suffered a 7-0 loss to the Tribe of William & Mary. The Lady Pirates goalkeeper Alexis Devueax would have a season-high 15 saves. On six separate occasions this season Deveaux has secured ten or more saves. Returning to action from her red card Mattie Edozie was able to produce a shot on goal.  As a freshman, Edozie leads the HU in shots on goal with five. 

Senior Lailah Daniel has been a staple in Hampton's starting lineup during the 2023 campaign. Since the start of conference play, she has only missed six minutes of action.  Makayla Wade is another regular in the starting lineup for the Lady Pirates. In only one CAA match she has not played the full 90 minutes. With three games remaining sophomore Alexis Deveuax still leads the nation for total saves with 144. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla. native is also climbing up the Coastal Athletic Association record book. Deveuax currently sits third for single-season saves.

A Look at Campbell

The Camels enter Sunday afternoon's match with a (3-5-6) overall record and are (1-3-5) in the league. However, Campbell last week picked up a win against Drexel and tied Delaware. CU is coached by Jeff Gross who enters his second season with the program. During his first season with the Camels, they secured the top seed in the Big South Tournament with an unbeaten record in conference play. At the end of the 2022 campaign, seven of CU's student-athletes would receive Big South honors.

Campbell's top goal scorer this season has been freshman Alyssa Tucker. Tucker through 14 matches has scored on four separate occasions. In the Camels win over Drexel, Tucker produced two goals on just three shot attempts. So far this CU has not been a physical team committing the third-fewest fouls per match. Campbell's Jlo Varada has been CU's go-to goalkeeper this season. Appearing In 16 matches the redshirt sophomore leads the Camels in saves with 46.
