HAMPTON, Va. – Junior
Jermaine Marrow scored a career-best 40 points and senior
Kalin Fisher added 27 as Hampton dropped an 86-81 decision to High Point on Saturday night.
The Pirates held a 11-point lead with just under five minutes left on a layup by Marrow to lead 57-46 with 4:54 left. High Point rallied and tied the game at 66 on a Jahad Proctor 3-pointer with 15 seconds left. The Panthers nearly pulled a miracle comeback in regulation but a Proctor 3-ball at the horn bounced off the rim for overtime.
In the extra session, Marrow scored 10 points including the last eight as Hampton gave up the first five points and trailed 81-73 with 31 seconds left on a Ricky Madison free throw. Marrow scored eight points in a 10 second span to get Hampton to 84-81 on a 3-pointer with seven seconds left but a pair of Tim Cameron free throws with three seconds iced the win.
With his 40 points, Marrow moved up three slots on the all-time scoring list for Hampton into fourth place with 1,766 points and became the first Pirate to score 40 points in a game since JaFonde Williams had 43 vs. Maine on Jan. 29, 1996. He is now 35 from becoming the school's all-time Division I era scoring leader.Â
Fisher moved into the top ten on the single season steals list with 56 after his two on Saturday. He accounted for four of Hampton's six 3-pointers on the day.
The Pirates are home again on Thursday with Longwood starting at 7 pm.
