PIRATES POWER PAST LANCERS TO SNAP SKID

HAMPTON, Va, -- An 11-2 run over a five minute span of the second half helped give Hampton some breathing room in an 86-66 win over Longwood on Thursday night.

The fifth and final tie of the game came on a JaShaun Smith 3-pointer with 17 minutes left for a 46-all score.  Hampton quickly scored the next five points on a Jermaine Marrow layup and an Akim Mitchell 3-point play to lead 51-46 just 40 seconds later.

A Gus Okafor jumper with 14:47 remaining brought the Lancers to 53-51, but Hampton responded with the 11-2 flurry to lead 64-53 with 9:15 left on a Greg Heckstall 3-pointer. Longwood got four points from Shabooty Phillips to get to 64-57 with 8:06 left, though Hampton answered with another flurry scoring 11 of the next 14 to lead 75-60 with 4:23 left on a Marrow layup.

In a first half that saw neither team lead by more than five points, Longwood took a 17-12 lead on a four-point play by Juan Munoz with 13:04 left.  Hampton scored the next 10 points to lead 22-17 on a Marrow 3-pointer at the 9:24 mark. 

Four ties occurred in the last 9:24 of the opening half with a Smith 3-pointer evening the game at 36 with 2:41 left.  A 3-pointer from Mitchell gave Hampton a 44-39 lead with 24 seconds but a Jaylon Wilson 3-ball brought the Lancers to 44-42 at the half.

Marrow topped Hampton with 24 points, seven rebounds and four assists.  Kalin Fisher just missed a double-double with 19 points and a team high nine rebounds.  Trevond Barnes added 13 points with two blocks.

Jaylon Wilson was the leading scorer for Longwood with 27 points and only had three in the second half.  Munoz chipped in with 13 and Phillips had 10 along with five assists.

Hampton goes right back on the road to Radford for a 5pm tip on Saturday.
