The Short Story: A Sydney Jackson penalty kick with 25 minutes left got Hampton on the board, but the Lady Pirates could get no closer in falling 2-1 to American University on a steamy Wednesday afternoon in Washington, D.C.

BEHIND THE NUMBERS

American outshot Hampton 11-3 in the first half, but saw that margin cut in half only outshooting the Lady Pirates 6-2 in the final 45 minutes.
Junior Maya Andrews made six saves for Hampton, while Morgan Lang made three for American.
Hampton had more corner kick chances 5-3, while committing more fouls than the hosts 12-7.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Hampton played the hosts evenly for the first nearly ten minutes before American 's Yari Bradfield broke the scoreless start with her first of two tallies at the 9:46 mark.
Bradfield put the hosts up 2-0 almost four minutes later as she took a feed from Emily Smith to give American a lead it would hold into halftime.
In the second half, Sydney Jackson was fouled on a breakaway and was awarded a penalty kick which she put past the goalie to cut the margin in half at the 65:09 mark.
