HAMPTON, Va. -- In a game that saw 13 ties and 22 lead changes, Jaylen Shaw hit five of six free throws in the last 30 seconds and visiting Coastal Carolina saw a last-ditch 3-pointer bounce off as the Chanticleers defeated Hampton 85-81 on Wednesday night.
Kalin Fisher scored a career-high 29 points to lead four in double figures for Hampton (4-6). The Pirates had a pair of double-doubles from
Jermaine Marrow (18 points-10 assists) and
Trevond Barnes (13 points-10 rebounds) while
Akim Mitchell had 11 points and six boards.
Neither team held more than a five-point advantage throughout the contest. Fisher hit a jumper at the 12:11 mark of the first half for Hampton's largest lead at 16-12. Amidou Bamba hit two free throws with 4:22 left in the opening half for Coastal Carolina's largest lead at 32-27. Hampton responded with a 9-2 flurry to lead 36-34 on a layup by Fisher with 1:41 left in the half. A jumper by Marrow with just under a minute left in the half put Hampton up 38-36 at intermission.
In the second half, no one held more than a four-point advantage. Fisher drained a triple to put Hampton up 76-74 with 2:32 left for what turned into the last lead for the Pirates. Shaw converted a three-point play with just under two minutes left to put Coastal back in front 77-76.
Marrow converted a three-point play with 12 seconds left to get Hampton to 82-81, but Shaw converted two free throws and Ajay Sanders hit one for the final margin.
Shaw topped Coastal with 19 points and eight assists to lead four in double figures. Demario Beck and Bamba came off the bench with 16 and 14 respectively to go with seven boards apiece, while Matt Lindsey added 13.
Hampton gets right back into action on Friday night at 8pm EST when they face Missouri State in Springfield, Mo.
