ORMOND BEACH, Fla. – The Hampton University softball team had its 13-game winning streak snapped Thursday evening at the Ormond Beach Sports Complex, as the bats went cold in a 9-1 loss to Bethune-Cookman in the MEAC Tournament.
The Lady Pirates (28-19), the No. 2 seed in the Northern Division, will take on Norfolk State on Friday at 10 a.m. in the lower bracket.
Bethune-Cookman, the top seed from the MEAC South, scored a run in the bottom of the first inning on an RBI single from Kaitlin Alamprese, before pushing across three runs in the top of the third. Kelsey Rodney got the scoring started with a single to drive in a run, before scoring herself on an error.
Alamprese drove in another run with a groundout to put Bethune-Cookman up 4-0.
Calesha Shelley scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to put the Lady Wildcasts (24-29) up 5-0.
The Lady Pirates answered in the top of the sixth inning; after sophomore
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) singled to lead off the inning, freshman
Kayla DeSchepper (Lakewood, Fla.) was hit by a pitch. Later in the inning, sophomore
McKalee Rouse (Aledo, Texas) singled home McCoy to cut the lead to 5-1.
But Bethune-Cookman responded in the bottom of the inning with four runs to put the game away, with all four runs being unearned.
Rouse had two of Hampton's six hits.
Junior
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.), the two-time reigning MEAC Pitcher of the Year, struck out five batters in five innings of work.
