HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team completed a weekend, three-game sweep of Morgan State on Sunday at the Lady Pirates Softball Stadium, wrapping up a 9-1 win in five innings.
The Lady Pirates (12-12, 3-0 MEAC) have won three straight games.
Hampton scored four runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to set the tone early, starting with a double steal; as freshman
Danielle Budden (Jackson, N.J.) stole second, junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) stole home to score the first run.
Budden and sophomore
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) later scored when freshman
Kayla DeSchepper (Lakewood, Calif.) reached on an error, before freshman
Taylor Clark (Queen Creek, Ariz.) brought in another run with a bunt single to put Hampton up 4-0.
Sophomore
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) singled home another run in the second inning to put Hampton up 5-0.
After Morgan State pushed across a run in the top of the fourth, the Lady Pirates added a run in the bottom of the frame on an RBI groundout from Budden.
Hampton scored three times in the bottom of the fifth to end the game via run rule, starting when sophomore
McKalee Rouse (Aledo, Texas) reached on a fielder's choice and scored DeSchepper.
Sophomore
Diamond Ponds (Riverside, Calif.) tripled home the final two runs of the day.
Ponds went 3-for-3 at the plate to lead the Lady Pirates on Sunday, while six other Hampton players each recorded a hit. Ponds and DeSchepper each drove in two runs.
Junior
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) picked up her eighth win of the season on the mound, giving up just one hit in her five innings of work.
