HAMPTON, Va. – Coming off a road trip in which it went 3-1, the Hampton University men's basketball team will return to the HU Convocation Center on Saturday to square off against rival Howard at 6 p.m.
The Pirates (11-11, 6-3 MEAC) dropped their first MEAC road game of the season on Monday, falling in double overtime to Morgan State 94-92. Senior forward
Du'Vaughn Maxwell (Manhattan, N.Y.), the reigning MEAC Defensive Player of the Week, led the Pirates with 25 points and 11 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
Sophomore guard
Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.) added 15 points, while sophomore guard
Brian Darden (Hampton, Va.) chipped in 11 points. Sophomore forward
Jervon Pressley (Charlotte, N.C.) added nine points and six rebounds for the Pirates.
The Bison (6-17, 4-4 MEAC) snapped a two-game skid Monday night with a 68-60 win over North Carolina A&T, and heading into the weekend, Howard is seventh in the MEAC. The Bison are in their fourth season under head coach – and former Hampton head coach – Kevin Nickelberry, and Howard was picked to finish 12th in the MEAC this season.
Freshman guard/forward James Daniel leads the team and the conference in scoring, averaging 20.4 points per game, while junior guard/forward Prince Okoroh is averaging 15.8 points and a team-high 5.6 rebounds per contest. Freshman guard/forward James Miller is third in scoring with 11.0 points per contest.
Hampton is 31-5 all-time against Howard, and the Pirates have won each of the last seven meetings between the two teams. In fact, Nickelberry has yet to defeat his former team in six match-ups. Howard's last win over the Pirates came in the 2009 Big Apple Classic in New York, when Howard won 56-54.
The Pirates are 13-1 against Howard at home since moving up to Div. I in 1995.
Hampton is 214-129 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. The Pirates are 6-3 in the MEAC this season after falling to Morgan State in double overtime on Monday.
The Pirates went 7-8 at the HU Convocation Center last season, even though they won three of their last five home contests. During Edward Joyner Jr.'s career as a head coach, Hampton is 32-25 overall in the Convocation Center, and the Pirates won their home debut on Nov. 9, defeating William & Mary 77-69, before falling 90-79 to Delaware on Nov. 17.
The Pirates won their first conference home game of the season on Dec. 7, beating Florida A&M 72-62, before beating Bethune-Cookman 85-52 on Dec. 9. Hampton also won home games on Dec. 29 and Jan. 4, a double-overtime 101-95 victory over Winthrop and an 87-60 win over Radford, before falling 71-68 to Coppin State on Jan. 18 and 80-71 to Morgan State on Jan. 20.
Hampton is 2-2 in conference home games so far this season.
