TOWSON, Md. – The Hampton University softball team narrowly dropped both games of a doubleheader against Towson on Wednesday at the Tiger Softball Complex, losing the first game 6-4 in eight innings before losing the second game 5-4.
The Lady Pirates (11-16) have lost five straight games.
Towson led 3-0 after three innings in the first game, before the Lady Pirates scored twice in the top of the fourth. Senior
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) doubled to left field to score senior
Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.), before freshman
McKalee Rouse (Aledo, Texas) added an RBI Double of her own to cut the lead to 3-2.
The Tigers added another run in the bottom of the fourth, before freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) tripled home junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) in the top of the fifth to cut Towson's lead to 4-3.
The Lady Pirates tied the game at 4-4 in the sixth when Scott scored on an error.
After a scoreless seventh inning, the Lady Pirates were held in check in the top of the eighth, before Cailie Barber ended the game in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run home run.
McCoy went 4-for-4 at the plate in the first game, while Rouse was 2-for-3.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) went 7.2 innings in the loss, recording a career-high 13 strikeouts.
The Lady Pirates took a 2-0 lead in the top of the third inning in the second game, when freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) ingled home Wilkins and senior
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) added an RBI single of her own.
McCoy gave Hampton another run in the fifth with an RBI groundout, putting the Lady Pirates up 3-0.
But a bases-loaded triple from Delanie Dunham and an RBI single from Jillian Donnelly in the fifth gave Towson a 4-3 lead. Hampton answered with a run in the sixth, thanks to a solo home run from Huwe, her second of the season, to tie the game at 4-4.
But Towson scored in the bottom of the sixth on an RBI single to take a 5-4 lead.
Wilkins and Langlois each went 3-for-4 at the plate in the second game. Langlois also struck out three batters in 6.0 innings of work on the mound.
The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, when they compete in the UMBC Tournament hosted by the University of Maryland Baltimore County.
