SOFTBALL TO COMPETE IN TINY LASTER TOURNAMENT

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Hampton University softball team will compete in the Tiny Laster FastPitch Tournament on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, playing four games over the course of three days.

The Lady Pirates (5-10) will take on Grambling State at 8 p.m. EST on Friday, before taking on Miles College on Saturday at 1 p.m. and Mississippi Valley State at 5 p.m. On Sunday, Hampton will take on Tennessee State at 12:30 p.m. EST.

Hampton split a doubleheader at Liberty on Wednesday, winning the first game 10-8 in eight innings before falling 10-1 in the second game. Senior Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) was the hero of the first game, hitting a grand slam in the eighth inning for her first home run of the season.

Prior to Wednesday, the Lady Pirates won three of their four games in the Elon Phoenix Softball Clash on Saturday and Sunday. Freshman Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) went a combined 5-for-10 at the plate over the weekend, hitting her first career home run and driving in five runs.

She hit her first career home run in Saturday's 5-1 win over Temple.

For her efforts at Elon, McCoy was named the MEAC Player of the Week.

Sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) has won her last four appearances on the mound, and she has recorded at least eight strikeouts in each of her last three appearances. Jackson is 4-3 on the season with a 3.41 ERA and 45 strikeouts in 49.1 innings pitched.

Freshman Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio), who two weeks ago was named MEAC Rookie of the Week, leads the team in hitting so far this season with a .433 batting average over 11 games, while junior Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) has a team-high 15 hits.

Senior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) leads the team with three home runs and 13 RBIs.

The Lady Pirates are 3-0 all-time against Grambling State, winning the last meeting 10-3 on Feb. 12, 2011, while going 0-3 all-time against Mississippi Valley State and 0-1 against Tennessee State. Hampton fell 4-0 to Mississippi Valley State on Feb. 12, 2011 and 12-4 to Tennessee State on Feb. 13, 2011.

Hampton has never faced Miles College.
