ELON, N.C. – The Hampton University softball team got off to a hot start in the Elon Phoenix Clash on Saturday at Hunt Softball Park, picking up wins over Saint Peter's and Temple.
The Lady Pirates (3-8) opened with a 10-0, five-inning win over Saint Peter's on Saturday, before beating Temple 5-1.
Hampton jumped out to a 6-0 lead after one inning in the first game, starting with an RBI double from sophomore
Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, AZ). Senior
Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) followed that by reaching on an error, which brought in another run, before senior
Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) singled home the third run of the inning.
After sophomore
Kerissa Burruel (Phoenix, Ariz.) scored, junior
Margaret Wilkins (Tustin, Calif.) singled home a pair of runs to put the Lady Pirates up 6-0.
The scoring continued in the bottom of the second inning, as a run scored when senior
Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) reached on an error. Freshman
Taylor McCoy (Riverview, Fla.) then singled up the middle to bring home two more runs.
Wilkins then singled to right-center field to bring home another run and giving Hampton a 10-0 lead.
Freshman
Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio), the reigning MEAC Rookie of the Week, picked up her first collegiate win on the mound after throwing three innings of one-hit ball, striking out two Peacocks. Freshman
Jecholia Pratt (Orlando, Fla.) pitched the other two innings.
Wilkins went 3-for-4 at the plate, driving in a team-high three runs.
Temple took a 1-0 lead after one inning in Hampton's second game, but the Lady Pirates tied the game at 1-1 in the top of the third inning after Huwe reached on a fielder's choice and Vallejo crossed the plate.
McCoy singled home a run in the fifth inning to give the Lady Pirates a 2-1 lead, before Hampton pushed across three runs in the top of the seventh inning.
Scott hit a home run to right-center field, her second of the season, before McCoy hit her first career home run over the left-field wall to give Hampton a 4-1 lead. Senior
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) singled home the final run of the game to score Vallejo.
Sophomore
Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) threw a complete game in picking up her second win of the season, tying her career high with nine strikeouts and giving up just four hits.
Ferguson, Burruel, Scott, and McCoy each had two hits against Temple.
