SOFTBALL OPENS SEASON IN LSU TIGER CHALLENGE

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 | Box Score 4
BATON ROUGE, La. – The Hampton University softball team opened the 2013 season on Friday and Saturday at Tiger Park with four games in the LSU Tiger Classic Challenge, including a pair of games against ranked teams.

The Lady Pirates fell 3-0 to Tulsa and 4-0 to Purdue on Friday, before falling 10-0 to No. 22 North Carolina and 9-3 to No. 10 LSU on Saturday.

Hampton (0-4) was the only team to score on LSU over the weekend.

The host Tigers were up 7-0 on Hampton after two innings – thanks in large part to a five-spot in the opening frame – but the Lady Pirates got on the board in the top of the third inning after an RBI double to left-center from senior Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.).

Hampton scored two more runs in the fourth, when senior Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) hit a two-run home run down the right-field line to cut LSU's lead to 7-3.

The Tigers added a run in the fifth and run in the sixth to take a 9-3 lead.

The Lady Pirates had five hits against LSU, and sophomore Jailynn Jackson (Virginia Beach, Va.) threw four innings of relief and recorded two strikeouts.

Hampton opened play on Friday against Tulsa, and the game was scoreless until Tulsa pushed across two runs in the bottom of the third inning thanks to a wild pitch and an RBI single. Another RBI single in the fifth gave Tulsa a 3-0 lead.

Lacey Middlebrooks held the Lady Pirates to just one hit.

Jackson struck out three in five innings of work in her first outing of the season.

Hampton and Purdue were scoreless through four innings on Friday afternoon, before the Boilermakers pushed across a run in the top of the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly. Purdue added two more runs in the sixth inning on a two-run single from Paris Andrew, before adding one more run in the seventh.

Senior Shine Huwe (Green Bay, Wisc.) led Hampton at the plate with a 2-for-3 effort, while freshman Bobbi Langlois (Medina, Ohio) went six innings in her collegiate debut.

Saturday's first game saw the Tar Heels score six runs in the first inning against the Lady Pirates, before adding two runs in the second inning to go up 8-0 after two frames. UNC added a run in the third and a run in the fourth, as the game only went five frames.

Scott and sophomore Bianca Vallejo (Chandler, Ariz.) each had a hit for the Lady Pirates. Jackson struck out two in 3.2 innings of relief work.

Vallejo was named to the All-Tournament Team.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, when they head to Albuquerque, N.M. for the University of New Mexico Lobo Classic.
