DOVER, Del. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will look for its second straight win on Monday, as the Pirates square off against Delaware State at the Memorial Hall Gym at 7:30 p.m.
The Pirates (8-14, 4-5 MEAC), in their third season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., beat Morgan State 68-63 on Monday in the HU Convocation Center in front of a national ESPNU audience. Senior guard
Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) led the way with 19 points, while senior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) added 15 points and sophomore center
David Bruce (Linden, N.J.) scored 10 points.
The Hornets (8-11, 5-3 MEAC) won their fourth straight game on Saturday, upending Norfolk State 67-50 at Memorial Hall. Freshman guard Amere May led the way with 14 points, while senior guard Jay Threatt added 13 points and junior forward Marques Oliver and freshman forward Tyshawn Bell each added 12 points.
The Hornets went 9-21 last season, finishing eighth in the MEAC with a mark of 5-11. Delaware State, under the direction of 12th-year head coach Greg Jackson, returns three starters and six letterwinners from last season, and the Hornets were picked to finish sixth in the MEAC this year.
Freshman guard Tahj Tate leads the Hornets in scoring, pouring in 15.5 points per game, while sophomore guard Casey Walker in the only other player in double figures with 11.8 points a contest. Oliver is the team's top rebounder, pulling down 7.3 boards per night.
The Hornets are scoring 63.5 points a contest, while giving up 63.3 points per night.
Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 17-13 against Delaware State, having won the last three meetings – including both match-ups last season. In all, the Pirates have won four of the last five games against the Hornets. Prior to that, Delaware State had won four straight meetings and eight out of nine. Hampton is 6-7 against Delaware State in Dover, Del.
Hampton is 195-114 all-time as a Div. I program (since 1995) against teams currently in the MEAC, including an 11-5 mark in the conference last season. North Carolina Central, in its first year in the MEAC, is the only team currently in the conference that the Pirates have not faced since moving to Div. I.
Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates have won two regular-season conference titles (2000-01, 2001-02) and four MEAC Tournament crowns (2001, 2002, 2006, 2011).
The Pirates went 8-5 on the road last season, winning three of their last four regular-season road games in 2010-11 – including the last two at Delaware State (71-64) and at Howard (83-72). The Pirates dropped their 2011-12 road opener on Nov. 17, falling 72-51 at Richmond before losing 66-52 at Rutgers on Nov. 20 and 54-53 to Fordham on Dec. 5, 74-72 to American on Dec. 7, 74-65 at Liberty on Dec. 17, 64-54 to Robert Morris on Dec. 20, 74-67 to James Madison on Jan. 9, 83-66 to Coppin State on Jan. 14 and 68-56 at Morgan State on Jan. 16.
For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 14-22 on the road – 0-9 this season.
