PIRATES COME UP SHORT AT HOME AGAINST DELAWARE STATE

HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University men's basketball team lost a barn-burner on Monday night to Delaware State 68-74 in double overtime at the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates (9-18, 5-8 MEAC) were led by junior forward Wesley Dunning (Washington, D.C.) who finished with a team and career-high 19 points and 13 rebounds, while senior guard Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) added 18 points and five rebounds.

Senior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) also chipped in 12 points while grabbing eight rebounds, while senior guard Mike Tuitt (Bronx, N.Y.) finished with 10 assists and seven points.

After Delaware State took a 12-6 lead on a Marcellus James dunk with 12:52 left in the first half, the Pirates went on a 6-0 run to tie the game at 12-12 at the 11:39 mark on a fast-break basket by Tolson.

Pellum later gave the Pirates a 17-16 lead at the 6:56 mark with a fast-break dunk; that basket kicked off a 7-0 Hampton run that culminated in a pair of free throws from senior forward Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) with 5:07 left in the half.

Delaware State fought back to take a 25-24 lead with 1:45 left in the half, but Tolson's layup at the 1:32 mark sent the Pirates into the half up 26-25.

The Pirates led by as many as seven in the second half, going up 38-31 after Pellum drained a 3-pointer with 11:38 left in regulation, but Delaware State led by three with 5:17 left, going up 51-48 after Marques Oliver hit a free throw.

Jay Threatt tied the game at 56-56 with 1:11 to play in regulation, but his trey at the horn missed the mark to force the first overtime. Tolson opened the first overtime with back-to-back 3-pointers to put Hampton up 62-58 at the 3:58 mark, but the Hornets closed the session on a 6-2 run to tie the score at 64-64 and force the second overtime.

Delaware State out-scored Hampton 10-4 in the second overtime to clinch the win.

The Pirates shot 32.3 percent (21-for-65) from the floor, hitting seven of their 22 3-pointers (31.8 percent) and 19 of their 27 free throws (70.4 percent). Hampton also held a 56-41 advantage on the glass.

Delaware State (13-12, 10-3 MEAC) shot 37.0 percent (27-for-73) from the floor, while also holding a 34-26 edge in points in the paint. The Hornets converted 24 Hampton turnovers into 17 points.

Oliver and Tahj Tate each scored 20 points for the Hornets, while Casey Walker added 17 points.
