HAMPTON, Va. – After a break for final exams, the Hampton University men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Tuesday night, taking on American at 7 p.m. at the HU Convocation Center.
This will be the third of four straight home games for the Pirates. Admission will be $1.
The Pirates (1-7), in their fourth season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., fell at home to Robert Morris 66-54 on Dec. 8, despite 13 points from junior guard
Ramon Mercado (Hollywood, Fla.) and nine points from freshman guard
Deron Powers (Williamsburg, Va.).
The Eagles (4-6) fell 54-42 to Columbia on Dec. 9, despite a team-high 12 points and seven rebounds from senior forward Stephen Lumpkins.
American has lost two of its last three games.
The Eagles were 20-12 overall last season, going 10-4 in the Patriot League, finishing third, and advancing to the first round of the CollegeInsider.com Tournament (CIT). American, in its 13th season under head coach Jeff Jones, returns three starters and six letterwinners from last year's squad.
Lumpkins leads the team in both scoring and rebounding, averaging 15.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. Senior guard Daniel Munoz is the only other Eagle in double figures, adding 10.3 points per contest.
The Eagles are averaging just 54.8 points a game on offense, while giving up 61.3 points a night.
Since moving up to Div. I in 1995, the Pirates are 0-1 against American after dropping the first meeting between the two teams 74-72 last season in Washington, D.C.
The Pirates are 0-4 all-time against teams from the Patriot League, having gone 0-1 against American and 0-3 against Holy Cross. Hampton has never faced Army, Bucknell, Colgate, Lafayette College, Lehigh, or the U.S. Naval Academy.
For his career as a head coach, Joyner is 21-14 at home, and the Pirates were 6-5 at home last season – beating William & Mary, High Point, Howard, South Carolina State, Morgan State and Maryland Eastern Shore, while losing to Savannah State, Norfolk State, Coppin State, Delaware State, and North Carolina Central.
Hampton defeated Howard 58-50 in its 2012-13 home debut, before falling to Robert Morris on Dec. 8.
