LADY PIRATES SWEPT BY DELAWARE

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team lost both game in its home-opening doubleheader on Tuesday, falling twice to the University of Delaware.

The Lady Pirates (4-9) dropped the first game 10-6, before falling 12-0 in five innings in the second game.

The Blue Hens opened the first game with a six-run first inning, beginning with a leadoff home run to left field by Jenny Richards. Delaware then took advantage of two walks and an error to push across five more runs, before adding another run in the top of the second inning on an RBI single from Amanda Stacevicz to take a 7-0 lead.

Delaware (2-5) scored again in the top of the fourth inning on a fielding error, before junior Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) hit her first home run of the season to lead off the bottom of the inning.

The Lady Pirates closed to within 8-6 with a five-run fifth inning. Senior Bre'Anna Brown (Los Angeles, Calif.) drove in the first run of the inning after being hit by a pitch, before Magett drove in another run after she was also hit by a pitch.

Junior Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) brought home a pair of runs with a single, before sophomore Adrianna Scott (Laurel, Md.) brought home another run with a sacrifice fly.

Gina Knuston led off the sixth inning with a home run, before Rachel Jones singled home another run to give Delaware a 10-6 lead.

Magett and Byrd each drove home two runs in the first game, while sophomore Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) went 2-for-4 at the plate. Byrd also struck out two batters in seven innings of work.

Stacevicz picked up her first win of the season on the mound.

The Blue Hens struck first in the third inning of the second game, pushing three runs across. Knuston got the scoring started with a solo homer, before Jones singled home the other two.

Knuston added an RBI single in the fourth inning to put Delaware up 4-0.

The Blue Hens then broke the game open in the fifth inning, scoring eight runs on five hits and two errors. Michelle McKinnon singled in the first run, before Samantha Pettie drove in another run on an error.

McKinnon closed out the scoring with a two-run single.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Friday, when they kick off the Lady Pirates Classic at the new Lady Pirates Softball Complex. They will play Brown at noon, before taking on Central Connecticut State at 2 p.m.
