DOVER, Del. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to get back into the win column on Saturday, when the Pirates head to Memorial Hall to take on Delaware State at 7 p.m.
The Pirates (19-8, 9-5 MEAC), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., have lost three straight following Monday's 58-55 loss to Florida A&M. Junior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 17 points, while junior guard
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) added 13 points. Junior forward
Danny Agbelese (Lanham, Md.) added eight points, 10 rebounds and three blocked shots.
Delaware State (9-17, 5-8 MEAC) lost its third straight game on Monday, falling 89-72 to Coppin State at the CSU Physical Education Complex. Freshman guard Desi Washington led the Hornets with a career-high 26 points, while freshman guard Casey Walker added 17 points.
Hampton is 16-13 against Delaware State since moving up to Division I in 1995, including a 70-66 overtime win at the HU Convocation Center this past Jan. 29. The two teams split last year's meetings; Delaware State won 58-56 in Memorial Hall, before the Pirates took a 64-45 win at the HU Convocation Center. The Hornets have won 12 of the last 17 meetings dating back to the 2002-03 season; prior to that, Hampton had won 11 straight over the Hornets. Hampton is 5-7 against Delaware State on the road.
The Pirates are one win away from their first 20-win season since 2001-02, when the Pirates went 26-7, won the MEAC and advanced to the NCAA Tournament.
The Hornets went 17-12 last season, finishing second in the MEAC with an 11-5 mark before falling to South Carolina State in the MEAC Tournament. Delaware State returns three starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad, and has been picked to finish fifth in the MEAC this season.
Washington leads Delaware State in scoring, pouring in 13.5 points per game, while Walker is averaging 13.3 points a contest. Sophomore forward Marques Oliver is averaging 10.6 points a game to go along with a team-high 6.2 rebounds per contest, while junior guard Jay Threatt is pouring in 10.0 points a game.
The Hornets are scoring 63.9 points a game, while giving up 66.5 points a contest.
The Pirates are 6-5 in true road games so far this season, and had won three straight on the road following a season-opening loss at Wake Forest before falling 69-57 at San Francisco. Hampton has beaten Fordham (58-48), George Washington (62-51), High Point (70-64), Coppin State (67-59), Bethune-Cookman (68-56) and Norfolk State (86-72) on the road. For his head coaching career, Joyner is 11-13 on the road.
