PIRATES TO TAKE ON UMES ON ESPNU

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will look for its second straight win against Maryland Eastern Shore on Monday at the HU Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.

The Pirates (16-5, 6-2 MEAC), in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., got back in the win column on Saturday with a 70-66 overtime win over Delaware State. Junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 28 points n 10-for-19 shooting, while also pulling down a career-high 13 rebounds. Senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) and senior guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) each added eight points.

UMES (4-16, 1-6 MEAC) lost its fourth straight game on Saturday, falling 77-73 to Howard. Junior guard Hillary Haley led the Hawks with 29 points and eight rebounds, going 4-for-5 from behind the arc, while sophomore guard Mark Robertson added 17 points in the loss.

Hampton is 18-6 against Maryland Eastern Shore since moving up to Division I in 1995. The Pirates have won 15 of the last 16 meetings against the Hawks, including a 79-65 decision in Princess Anne, Md. last season. Hampton won the first meeting in the 1996-97 season, 75-70 at the HU Convocation Center, but the Hawks went on to win five of the next seven meetings before Hampton rattled off 13 in a row. The Pirates are 10-2 against UMES at the Convocation Center, having taken eight straight over the Hawks at home.

The Hawks went 11-21 last season, finishing sixth in the MEAC with an 8-8 record; they beat Coppin State to open the MEAC Tournament, before falling to South Carolina State in the next round. UMES returns four starters and eight letterwinners from last year's squad, including Preseason Second Team selection Haley, and were picked to finish seventh in the MEAC.

Haley is leading the Hawks in scoring, averaging 16.7 points per game, while junior guard Dishawn Bradshaw is averaging 11.0 points per contest. Junior forward Tyler Hines is pulling down a team-high 6.5 rebounds per game.

UMES is scoring 67.9 points a night, but giving up 80.0 points per game.

The Pirates are 6-1 at the HU Convocation Center so far this season following a 70-66 overtime win over Delaware State on Saturday. Hampton has also beaten Georgia State 60-56, before falling to Delaware 55-53, beating Towson 78-67, beating Liberty 62-59, beating Norfolk State 63-56 and beating North Carolina A&T 82-77 at home so far this season. The Pirates went 6-6 at home last season, winning their last three games at the Convocation Center.
