PIRATES UPEND DELAWARE STATE IN OVERTIME

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team needed an extra five minutes to beat Delaware State on Saturday evening, taking a 70-66 overtime victory at the HU Convocation Center.

The Pirates (16-5, 6-2 MEAC) outscored the Hornets 13-9 in the overtime period. Sophomore forward Wesley Dunning (Washington, D.C.) scored the team's first six overtime points, and junior guard Christopher Tolson (Laurel, Md.) hit all four of his free throws down the stretch.

Hampton went on a 12-3 run in the second half, taking a 52-48 lead with 4:19 left in the second half on a 3-pointer from junior guard Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.). Pellum scored 10 of the Pirates' 12 points in that run.

Senior guard Brandon Tunnell (Wilmington, Del.) sank a layup with 1:52 left in regulation to put Hampton up 56-50, but the Hornets (8-11, 4-3 MEAC) took a 57-56 lead with 41 seconds left on a Desi Washington 3-pointer.

Pellum sank one of two free throws with 15 seconds left to force overtime.

Pellum led the Pirates with 28 points on 10-for-19 shooting, making six of his 10 3-pointers; he also led the team with a career-high 13 rebounds. Tunnell and senior forward Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) each had eight points, with Funches adding 10 rebounds.

Tunnell dished out nine assists.

Hampton shot 41.3 percent (26-for-63) from the floor, while dominating the boards – outrebounding Delaware State 46-29. The Pirates also had a 30-14 advantage in the paint.

Delaware State shot 40.0 percent (24-for-60) from the floor, making 11 of its 28 3-pointers. Casey Walker led the Hornets with 25 points, while Marques Oliver added 13 points and 12 rebounds. Washington added 12 points.

Delaware State took a 26-25 lead into the half after Oliver sank a layup with 32 seconds left in the period. Hampton had opened the game on an 8-3 run, but the Hornets stormed back with a 14-2 run to take a 17-10 lead with 10:39 left in the half on a Wilson 3-pointer.

The Pirates answered with an 11-2 run to take a 21-19 lead on a Tolson layup with 5:30 left in the half.

Pellum led Hampton with seven first-half points, while Funches added six to go along with a team-high five rebounds. Hampton shot 45.8 percent (11-for-24) from the floor in the opening frame, hitting one of nine 3-point tries.

The Hornets shot 40.0 percent (10-for-25) from the floor, hitting four of 12 3-pointers. Walker led Delaware State with 10 points at the half.

The Pirates will return to action on Monday, when they take on Maryland Eastern Shore at the HU Convocation Center at 7 p.m. The game will be televised live on ESPNU.
