HAMPTON, Va. – The Hampton University softball team took two of three games from Delaware State in Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) action over the weekend, splitting Saturday's doubleheader before winning Sunday's game in dramatic fashion at Lady Pirates Field.
The Lady Pirates won 4-3 on Sunday, thanks to a walk-off three-run home run from
Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.) in the bottom of the seventh inning. Saunders' 11th homer of the season came with two out as the Lady Pirates were trailing 3-1.
Her laser shot over the left field wall gave Hampton its second win in three games against the Lady Hornets.
Hampton (20-34, 8-4 MEAC) took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning, when
Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) blooped a single up the middle to bring home
Cynammon Bell (Lithonia, Ga.). It was the second hit of the game for the Lady Pirates, who had been held hitless in the first three innings.
The Lady Hornets answered with two runs in the top of the fifth inning, when Brittany Ruark scored on a passed ball and Chelsea Stern drove in another run with a bunt single. Rachel Carroll added an RBI single in the sixth inning to give Delaware State a 3-1 lead.
Sydni Benton (Chicago, Ill.) went five innings in picking up her fifth win of the season, striking out four and giving up just one hit and one earned run. Saunders and
Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.) each went 1-for-3 at the plate.
The Lady Pirates won the second game of Saturday's doubleheader 11-2 in five innings after dropping the first game 3-1. Hampton struck first in the first inning of the second game, thanks to an RBI single from Saunders, before Delaware State answered with two runs in the third on an RBI double by Stern and a bunt single to bring home a run from Breanne Parr.
Hampton would then score five runs in the bottom of the third, thanks to RBI singles from
Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.),
Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) and
Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.), before the Lady Pirates scored a run on a wild pitch and another on an error.
The Lady Pirates scored five more runs in the fourth inning to break the game wide open.
Carla Trimble (Riverside, Calif.) was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to bring home the first run, before Boykin cleared the bases with a triple and Brents singled home another run.
Benton went the distance to get the win, as Boykin went 2-for-3 with four RBIs and Vickers went 2-for-4 at the plate.
The Lady Hornets struck first in Saturday's first game, on a sacrifice groundout from Janelle Lukens in the top of the second inning, before Parr added a solo home run in the fourth inning to go up 2-0.
Vickers would get the Lady Pirates on the board in the bottom of the fourth, scoring on a wild pitch.
Parr drove in another run with a single in the sixth inning to push the game to its final margin.
Saunders and
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) each had a hit for the Lady Pirates, who were held to just two hits by Andrea Waters.
