LADY PIRATES UPEND UMES, COMPLETE THREE-GAME SWEEP

HAMPTON, Va. –
The Hampton University softball team picked up its third straight win on Saturday afternoon, upending Maryland-Eastern Shore 7-1 at Lady Pirates Field.

The Lady Pirates (14-21, 3-0 MEAC) had 10 hits on the afternoon, and jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Tamara Vickers (Lawndale, Calif.), who led off the game with an infield single and a stolen base, scored the first run of the game on a wild pitch, before Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) singled up the middle to bring home two more runs.

Rebecca Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) continued her hot streak, doubling home the fourth run of the game in the bottom of the second inning, before scoring on a left-field double by Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) to make it a 5-0 lead for the Lady Pirates.

The Lady Hawks (1-15, 0-3 MEAC) got on the board in the top of the third, thanks to an RBI single by Jasmine James.

Hampton would answer in the bottom of the inning, though, thanks to a leadoff home run to left field by Estep – her second of the season – to make it a 6-1 game. The Lady Pirates would score their final run of the day in the bottom of the fourth, thanks to an RBI single from Kelsei Saunders (Suffolk, Va.).

Estep went 2-for-3 at the plate with a team-high three RBI to lead the Lady Pirates, while Jeffries went 2-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI. Magett went 1-for-2 at the plate, walking once, scoring twice and driving in a run.

For the three-game series, Magett went 7-for-10 with four home runs with eight RBI and eight runs scored.

Sydni Benton (Chicago, Ill.) went seven innings on the mound to pick up her second win of the season, striking out three and scattering six hits. She only gave up one run on the afternoon, which was unearned.

Chelsea Logan went 2-for-3 at the plate to lead UMES.

The Lady Pirates will return to action on Monday, taking on North Carolina Central in a doubleheader at Lady Pirates Field.
