MAGETT KEYS LADY PIRATES’ SWEEP OF UMES

Box Scores: Game 1 | Game 2

HAMPTON, Va. –
A record afternoon at the plate for sophomore Rebecca Magett helped the Hampton University softball team sweep Maryland-Eastern Shore in a doubleheader on Friday afternoon at Lady Pirates Field.

Magett (Grand Rapids, Mich.) hit a school-record four home runs in the second game of the doubleheader, including a walk-off two-run shot in the bottom of the seventh inning to help the Lady Pirates escape 10-9. The Lady Hawks held a 9-7 lead heading into the inning, but Sharde' Estep (Aquasco, Md.) got Hampton on the board with an RBI double down the left field line.

Magett then cranked her fourth homer of the game, sending the ball over the left-center field fence and giving the Lady Pirates (13-21, 2-0 MEAC) their second straight win.

UMES jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning, thanks in part to four Lady Pirate errors. But Magett hit her first home run to lead off the bottom of the inning to get Hampton on the board. Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) added an RBI single to pull the Lady Pirates within 3-2.

Magett tied the game at 3-3 in the bottom of the second inning with her second home run of the game.

The Lady Hawks (1-14, 0-2 MEAC) answered with five runs in the top of the third inning, thanks to a two-run double from Ashley Johnson and two more runs from a single from CyAnna Scott. Kyrus Whitehurst also scored on a throwing error to give UMES an 8-3 lead.

Brooke Boykin (Riverside, Calif.) drove in a run with a ground ball in the bottom of the third, pulling the Lady Pirates to within 8-4, before Johnson drove in another run with a single in the top of the fourth.

Magett's third homer of the game came in the bottom of the fourth inning to pull Hampton within 9-5.

Cynammon Bell (Lithonia, Ga.) added a two-run home run of her own in the bottom of the sixth inning to cut the Lady Hawks' lead to 9-7.

Magett drove in five runs overall, going 4-for-5 at the plate to lead the Lady Pirates. Byrd picked up her fifth win of the season, going seven innings on the mound, striking out 10 and giving up just five hits.

Johnson had two of those hits.

Hampton took the first game of the doubleheader 9-1 in five innings, thanks in large part to a six-run first inning. Estep drove in a run with a single to left field, before Byrd was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Magett singled home another run. Boykin followed with a two-run single up the middle, before Magett scored on an error.

UMES got on the board in the top of the fifth inning on a throwing error, but the Lady Pirates answered with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Magett doubled home the first run of the inning, before scoring on a throwing error. Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) singled to left field to drive home the last run of the game.

Ferguson and Magett each had two hits for the Lady Pirates. Jada Jeffries (Lithonia, Ga.) went five innings, giving up just four hits and striking out six to pick up her seventh win of the season.

In all, Magett drove in seven runs on six hits on the day.
