BLACKSBURG, Va. – The Hampton University softball team lost both games of a doubleheader with Virginia Tech at Tech Softball Park on Wednesday, falling 10-2 in six innings in the first game before losing the second game 8-0 in five innings.
The Hokies scored four runs in the bottom of the first inning of the first inning, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Kristin Graham and a three-run double to left field from Kelsey Hensel. A wild pitch in the bottom of the second inning brought home Marra Hvozdovic to put Virginia Tech up 5-0.
Nina Ferguson (Plymouth, Minn.) gave Hampton (11-21) its first run in the top of the fifth inning, scoring on a wild pitch, and
Tiffany Brents (Chino Hills, Calif.) singled home another run in the top of the sixth to cut the Hokies' lead to 5-2.
Virginia Tech would answer with five runs in the bottom of the sixth, though, thanks to a wild pitch, an error and a fielder's choice – as well as an RBI single from Ashton Ward.
Alicia Field had two of the Hokies' nine hits, while Hensel drove in a game-high three runs. Graham gave up five hits and struck out eight in picking up her first win of the season.
The Hokies (13-17) struck first in the bottom of the first inning in the second game, thanks to a fielding error. Virginia Tech would score five more runs in the bottom of the third, when Bkaye Smith tripled home a run and Richelle McGarva singled home another run before Stephanie Kujawa singled home two more runs.
Hvozdovic tripled home another run in the bottom of the fourth inning, and Kristina Cruz doubled to right-center field to push the game to its final margin.
Ward struck out eight and gave up just four hits in five innings of work. Kujawa had two hits for the Hokies, driving in a pair of runs.
Travonna Byrd (Newport News, Va.) pitched four innings, striking out three.
