WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Hampton University men's basketball team will resume play in the Dick's Sporting Goods NIT Season Tip-Off on Monday and Tuesday in the Charles E. Smith Center on the campus of George Washington University.
The Pirates will take on Boston University on Monday at 5:30 p.m., before facing the host Colonials on Tuesday at 8 p.m.
The Pirates, in their second season under head coach Edward Joyner Jr., won their second straight game on Friday, beating Fordham 58-48 at the Rose Hill Gymnasium. Junior guard
Darrion Pellum (Hampton, Va.) led the Pirates with 19 points, while senior forward
Charles Funches (Jersey City, N.J.) and junior guard
Kwame Morgan II (Largo, Md.) each added 12 points. Funches also pulled down a team-high eight rebounds.
The Terriers (2-2) are coming off a 58-37 win over Marist on Friday night at Case Gymnasium. Junior guard Matt Griffin scored a career-high 21 points – all in the second half – while junior forward Patrick Hazel added a career-high 13 rebounds and four blocks.
George Washington (1-1) also beat Marist, 79-59 on Wednesday behind a career-high 23 points from junior guard Tony Taylor. The Colonials' first win of the season gave head coach Karl Hobbs the 150th win of his career. In all, four George Washington players scored in double figures.
The Pirates are 0-1 all-time against George Washington, losing the only meeting between the two teams 80-73 on Nov. 25, 1995. Hampton and Boston University have never played each other.
The Terriers were picked to win their sixth America East championship this season, coming off a 2009-10 season that saw Boston University win 21 games in Patrick Chambers' first season as head coach. Chambers returns three starters to this year's squad, including Preseason All-America East nominees senior John Holland and junior Jake O'Brien.
Holland leads the Terriers in scoring so far this season, with an average of 18.5 points per game, while O'Brien is averaging 12.0 points a contest, while also pulling down a team-high 6.0 rebounds per game. Patrick Hazel is averaging 5.5 rebounds a game, second-best on the team, while Holland is third in rebounding with 5.0 boards a game.
The Colonials were picked to finish 10th in the Atlantic 10 this season, coming off a year in which George Washington won 16 games. Sophomore guard Lasan Kromah, who was an All-Rookie selection last year, was named Preseason Third Team All-A-10 this season.
Junior guard Tony Taylor leads four Colonials averaging double figures, scoring 20.5 points a game to go along with a team-high 6.5 rebounds and 5.0 assists per contest. Freshman forward Chris Fitzgerald is averaging 16.0 points a night, while senior center Joseph Katuka scores 13.0 a night. Freshman forward Nemanja Mikic is averaging 10.0 points per game.
So far this season, the Pirates are 1-1 on the road, following Friday's 58-48 win over Fordham. Second-year head coach Edward Joyner Jr. is 8-10 on the road in his career as a head coach.
