PIRATES TO TAKE ON HORNETS ON ROAD

Game Notes

DOVER, Del. –
The Hampton University men's basketball team will look to continue its winning ways on the road, traveling to Memorial Hall on Saturday to take on the Hornets of Delaware State in a Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) match-up at 4 p.m.

The Pirates (6-13, 3-4 MEAC) picked up their second win in the last three games, holding off Florida A&M on Monday 66-53 at the HU Convocation Center. Michael Freeman (Alexandria, Va.) led the Pirates with 17 points and 10 rebounds to record his seventh double-double of the season. Delaware State (9-8, 4-2 MEAC) picked up its fifth win in its last six games on Monday, beating Coppin State 63-59 on the road.

Since joining the MEAC in 1995, the Pirates are 14-12 against Delaware State; the two split a pair of meetings last season. After Delaware State escaped the HU Convocation Center with a 49-39 win on Feb. 7, 2009, the Pirates answered with a 51-32 win in the first round of the MEAC Tournament. The Hornets have won four of the last five meetings between the two teams. Hampton fell in the first-ever meeting against Delaware State, 77-68 in the 1996-97 season, before winning 11 in a row against the Hornets. The Pirates are 5-6 against Delaware State at Memorial Hall.

The Hornets went 8-24 last season, finishing 10th in the MEAC with a 6-10 record before falling to Hampton 51-32 in the opening round of the MEAC Tournament. Returning three starters and seven letterwinners, Delaware State was picked to finish ninth in the MEAC this season.

Senior guard Marcus Neal leads the Hornets in scoring, sitting tied for seventh in the MEAC at 13.9 points per game, while redshirt-senior forward Frisco Sandidge is pouring in 13.3 points a night to go along with his team-high 6.3 rebounds per game. Sandidge has led the team in scoring eight times this season, while Neal has paced the Hornets in seven contests. Sandidge has also paced the team in rebounds 10 times.

The Hornets are averaging a MEAC-worst 58.5 points per game on offense, while giving up a conference-best 60.2 points per night on defense. Opponents are out-rebounding Delaware State by an average of 30.9-27.6 per contest.

The Pirates are 2-7 so far this season in true road games, thanks to victories at Wyoming (Nov. 28, 78-67) and at North Carolina A&T (Jan. 18, 65-55). Ten of Hampton's first 12 games were away from the HU Convocation Center, including a stretch of games from Nov. 25 through Dec. 23. Hampton is also 1-2 on the season in neutral-court games, including a 56-54 loss to Howard in the Big Apple Classic in Madison Square Garden on Dec. 5. So far this season, the Pirates are 1-1 on the road in MEAC games.
