Jim Old joined Hampton University in the fall of 2017 as an Assistant Coach with over 15 years of lacrosse coaching experience at the youth, High School, and collegiate level.
As the Defensive Coordinator and Face-Off coach, Old’s units were a key part of the Pirates’ 2018 an 2019 season where the Pirates were among the national leaders in caused turnovers and ground balls.
Before Hampton, Old was the Men’s Club Head Coach for Old Dominion University, leading the Monarchs to their first appearance, plus 4 additional trips, to the National College Lacrosse League playoffs. Prior to ODU, Old was Maury HS (Norfolk, VA) Head Coach and has coached extensively at the youth level. His playing experience started with the club program at Virginia Tech and continued with various post collegiate club teams as he served a 20-year career in the U.S. Navy flying F-14 Tomcats.
Old has been in a leadership role with US Lacrosse for over 15 years, last serving as the Tidewater Chapter of USL President for eight years until taking the position at Hampton, and he continues to serve on USL national committees. In 2015 he was selected as the inaugural US Lacrosse Homer R. Schwartz Leadership Award winner.
Old received his Bachelor’s from Virginia Tech, and his Master’s of Public Administration from Auburn University at Montgomery while attending the U.S. Air Force’s Command and General Staff College. Old is a Regional Director for his defense consulting firm, lives in Williamsburg, and is married to the former Beth Schardt with two adult children.
